PST file suddenly asks for password after system change

This is not the first time I've experienced this problem, and Outlook
2010 is not the only version of Outlook in which I have seen it. I
recently changed my laptop from Vista x64 Home Edition to Windows 7
x64 Professional—therefore, a complete “fresh” install.

For no apparent reason, when I tried to use my old PST file, it now
asks for a password on the new system. There was no password on the
file in the old system.

I ran scanpst on the file and it found and corrected some errors but
the file still wants a password.

Why does this happen when one moves a PST file to a new system? What
do I do now—I definitely want to keep the file!!!

How did you move the old pst files over to your new install. Can you post it in
detail

Thanks for the reply. I believe that in all cases I have simply
copied them from disc images to the new system.

I discovered that a corrupted PST file can cause this issue. You'll probably see that the size of your PST file is very small, like 500kb. What I was able to do is right-click on the corrupted PST file from Explorer and choose "Restore Previous Versions" You can then select an earlier restore point on the file before it was corrupted.

If your PST file suddenly asks for a password after a system change, there are a few things you can do to try to resolve the issue:

1. Check the username and password: Make sure that you are entering the correct username and password for your PST file. If you are not sure, try using your Windows login credentials to access the file.

2. Reset the password: If you have forgotten the password for your PST file, you can reset it by using the "Change Password" option in the Account Settings menu of Outlook. Or you can use Gaintools PST Password Recovery Tool to reset the PST file password: https://www.gaintools.com/pst/password/

3. Disable password protection: If you are no longer interested in password-protecting your PST file, you can remove the password protection by using the "Change Password" option in the Account Settings menu of Outlook, and leaving the new password fields blank.

4. Check file permissions: Ensure that you have permission to access the PST file. Make sure that your user account has sufficient privileges to read and write to the file.

If none of these steps work, you may need to contact Outlook support for further assistance in resolving the issue.
