The headings of unread messages should be displayed in bold text in my Inbox,
but are not. how do I make them appear in bold?

You don't state your Outlook version, so the following is for OL 2003.
That should be happening already. Try resetting the view with View>Arrange
By>Current View>Reset Current View. If that doesn't work, click
View>Arrange By>Current View>Customize Current View>Automatic Formatting.
Select "Unread messages" and choose a bold font.
