Hi,

My computer's default email client is outlook. The internet explorer
default email program is also setup as outlook, however, when I click on
mailto:email address link, it always brings up the outlook express. Is there
any way to fix the default email handler?

Thanks

Open Windows Explorer and click Tools>Folder Options>File Types. Locate the
"URL:MailTo Protocol" file type, select it, and click Advanced. Select the
word "open" listed in the Actions pane and click Edit. On the "Application
used to perform action" field, enter the following:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OfficeXX\Outlook.exe" -c IPM.Note /m "%1"

Include the quotes and spaces, but make sure "XX" corresponds to your
Outlook version, which you decided to keep a secret. Use "10" for Outlook
2002 and "11" for Outlook 2003, for example. Check the "Use DDE" box, if
not checked and "Outlook" in the "Application" field. The Topic field
should contain "System". Click OK, OK, OK.

The Url:MailTo Protocol does not exist but URL does in the list. Shall I add
a new file type? or shall I edit the existing URL?

Thanks

Make sure that you go into Outlook, click on Tools then Options, then
click the Other tab. Make sure the box labeled "Make Outlook the
default program for E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar" is checked. Close
Outlook. If you still have a problem, then follow these instructions:

(WARNING: EDITING THE REGISTRY INCORRECTLY CAN DAMAGE YOUR OPERATING
SYSTEM. USE CAUTION.)

Click Start - Run
Type in Regedit and press {enter}
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Outlook Express
Highlight the key Outlook Express, right-click and choose Export
Name the file ('Outlook Express Reg Key' for example) and Save it
someplace convenient like on the desktop.
Next DELETE the Outlook Express key. This will clear Outlook Express
as a mail client.
Close the registry and your problem should be solved.

If you decide you do not like the effect this edit causes, you can
always double-click the file you saved on the desktop and it will
automatically be re-added to the registry for you.

How about the opposite question? I like Outlook Express as my default, but
every time I click on Outlook, then back to OE, OE announces it is no longer
my default.

How can I keep this consistent? And does Trend Micro's PC-Cillin version 7
have anything to do with this?

Thanks up front,

Where are you looking? If in Folder Options-> File Types, look in the (NONE)
section or sort by "File Types"

In Control Panel-> Internet Options-> tab Programs set another application
as the default mail client and press Apply. After this you can change it
back to Outlook. The MailTo protocol should recreate itself now.

I think we're having a double conversation here. Check my reply to your

Great new !! So there is a string for my hotmail or Live mail to be the
default email. I have thunderbird on there with no support. no help from
Mozilla so its locked up and not way to change the default email client. I'd
like to rid my pc of thunderbird but a string at least in hotmail or live
mail will let it work !!

disable all of the start-up items to prevent them from running in the background.
I recommend CCleaner from http://www.piriform.com/
Then you should be able to uninstall itout interference from other running programs.
note: you might want to disable/unhook your network card/cable if your turning off Anti-Virus

You need a mail client in order to have a "default". Outlook (since this is
an Outlook newsgroup) will certainly do the job. There's nothing you can
change in the MailTo file type to make a mail service a default.
