My friend can read his Hotmail in Outlook 2003 but he does work for MS too.
I also know people who can read Hotmail in Outlook in versions prior to 2003.
I have had my Hotmail addresses for a long time like 5-8 yrs for the ones I
use now and I can't read it in Outlook 2003 because it tells me I need to pay
for MSN plu or something like that, some sort of MSN thing I need to pay for.
I think this is bogus is there another way around it or do I need to try
with Outlook Express (YUCK!) or an older version of Outlook? What about a
newer version of Outlook with the Vista release?

Older Hotmail accounts were grandfathered in but you had to have it installed and active prior to Sept. 04. If you try to add it now, you cannot - you need to pay for Hotmail, just like Yahoo! mail and others that used to be free.

Did you let your Hotmail account idle for a long time? Maybe they
cancelled your account because it wasn't being used but then you
reactivated it before their expiration period (the account goes
inactive before it expires). Was YOUR account created *before*
November 2004 (about the time when Microsoft stopped WebDAV via HTTP
access to freeie Hotmail accounts)?
