We use Exchange 2003, Outlook 2003, SP3... we have received from one of our
external clients emails that have attachments with embedded emails... we can
open the attachment once, but on the second or subsequent attempts, we get
Operation Failed message.. I can restart Outlook, and then can open the
attachment, but again, any additional attempts to open the file, same thing
as before...

I can repeat this issue internally:

1. create new mail
2. Click insert item, then select an email, and make sure 'as attachment' is
selected.
3. click send

I've sent this to myself, and experience the issues described above. So, it
cannot be an issue with our external client...

Any suggestions as where to start tshooting this would be appreciated.

Thanks!

What's the file type?
I have seen that problem with PDF's. But saving it to the Desktop first
(File - Save Attachments) works fine.

This was just a regular email that has been attached using the Insert Item
option - when you follow my steps provided, can you reproduce it on your
system?

Clean the Outlook Secure Temp Folder and see if that helps:

thanks for the quick reply...

the link provided states to find the folder via the regkey... I followed the
steps, and even though the regkey path shows a folder titled OLK89 under the
Temporary Internet Files folder ... this subfolder does not exist on my
system.. should it?

Windows Explorer cannot see subfolders if you are using it to view Temporary
Internet Files. Instead, in the Windows Explorer Address Bar, enter:

%UserProfile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK89

and click Go. What do you see now?

We have the same issue at our company. It is somehow related to
messages forward by Windows mobile devices. These devices are using
active sync to connect through OWA to send the mail.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to everyone... for some reason the login
kept giving me a page cannot be found message...

Anyway... I did find a resolution to a point... I removed the addins listed
under the regkey: hkcu\software\microsoft\office\outlook\addins

the addin was for Go To meeting (GTM)... once removed the embedded
attachments started working again...

One other system that this was happening with has GTM and Google Desktop...
He was not willing to remove Google Desktop, but I did remove GTM... I have
not heard back from him that this was the fix or not.....

We can consider this closed.. thanks for all your help.

We have 100 Motorola Q9's that connect through our OWA address, but it may
actually be using an OMA connection. I guess I mispoke a little bit. All
users are experiencing the issue. The three computers I have tested
personally, do not have any toolbars or any search engine installed and still
experience the problem.

Thank you
James
