This means that the cache file (ost-file) doesn't comply with the Exchange
mailbox. You are now asked if you want to connect to Exchange and see the
Exchange mailbox contents or to remain offline and see the ost-file
contents. This allows you to recover mail from the ost-file if they are not
on the Exchange server anymore. When done you can delete the ost-file and
have it rebuild the next time when you start Outlook.

Yep, that fixed it. I switched caching off in the profile and closed outlook.
Deleted the outlook profile via Control panel and then recreated it again.

cheers

There is a very detailed and informative article on TechNet at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/guides/UseE2k3RecStorGrps/6923d327-f5a1-48a6-bfdb-1ef9ef9a928c.mspx
