I am getting ready to format my computer; however I don't know how to take my
emails and my address book off the computer before I format and then put them
back on after formatting. I use Office XP Professional. Can you please
advise? I have been told that the import/export feature does not work;
however I am not sure if that feature also copies my emails I have in my
inbox too.
Thank you

There is no address book in Outlook. The file you need is your Personal
Folders file (*.pst) It's where all the mail, calendar, contacts etc are
stored.

Take a look at these pages for info on Outlook data backup or transfer:

Thank you so much for your help. To ensure that I understand the articles
you gave me let me recap before I really do some damage

Before formatting
Turn on hidden files and folders
Copy and paste the pst file from drive:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook to a CD. My mom has created some
folders under the inbox and I am assuming when the pst file is copied those
folders are copied as well?
After formatting
Install Outlook and complete setup
Click file and point to the pst file copied on CD; which will probably
create 2 personal folders since she has a POP3 account.
Rename the pst file to old data that I want to keep
To delivery email message to pst file (old data)
Tools/e-mail accounts/view or change existing email accounts/select the pst
file (old data)
Restart outlook
To delete original personal folder (not old data pst file)
Right click personal folder and click close
I am assuming at this point that I can rename the folder old data back to
personal folder right?

Thanks again
Sheila

No. There should be no renaming of PST files at all. Ever.
All you need to do is copy your old PST file to the hard drive to any
location OTHER than the default location and make sure you have removed its
read only attribute. Then just set it up to be the default PST file for your
new profile. If you have already created an Outlook profile that has a new,
default PST file, then just open the old PST file in Outlook, set it as the
default, restart Outlook, then close the new PST file.

I am a little confused I guess I read the last website incorrect. I am not
that good with computer so I guess I need more details sorry. I have not
done anything to the computer yet. Can you modify my instructions below or do
you have a website that tells me exactly what to do?
Thanks

Where did you post the instructions? Are you talking about the 3 websites
you gave me? I copied the instructions out of one of them on my prior post
and you said no dont rename. I also did a backup of the pst file and put on
a CD and I noticed that one is called outlook and the other archieve. Do I
need both?

I think the below are the instructions. If not could you please modifiy

Before formatting
Turn on hidden files and folders
Copy and paste the pst file from drive:\Documents and
Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook to a CD.
After formatting
Install Outlook and complete setup.
Copy the pst file on the CD drive to my documents taking off read only access.
Click file and point to the pst file copied in my documents;
To delivery email message to pst file in my documents

Tools/e-mail accounts/view or change existing email accounts/select the pst
file in my documents

Restart outlook
To delete original personal folder
Right click personal folder and click

Now I have already cooies the pst file; however in that location there were
two one is called outlook and the other archieve. Do I need both?

The archive folder is set up according to the preferences you have set for
autoarchiving. Yes you need it, but you do not have to leave it open in your
profile if you don't want to.
