When I enter a new name into my address book, I always specify that it be
displayed on the address list as last-name-first, the way we usually file
names. But then it always appears on the list as first-name-first, no matter
what I try. How do I get it to list them correctly?

I guess that displayed on the address list as last-name-first means
that you have specified "file as" as last name first. To make the list
appear in that order you have to sort by "file as", as opposed to sort
by "full name".

The two sorting options are "First, Last..." or "File As..." and in most
versions you access these settings here:
Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or address
books > Outlook Address Book > Change.

Also, Contact data should not be entered in the Address Book view. Use the
Contacts Folder instead.

Well, I entered the Full Name line as first-name-first, and the File As line
as last-name first. And it still comes up wrong.
Also, once we solve this problem, is there an easy way to convert the names
already in the address book so the last name appears first?

My apologies I made the incorrect assumption that you were working in
the Contacts folder where you have a much greater range of options for
sorting etc. I agree with Russ you should enter your contacts into the
contacts folder. My Putlook address book is empty and I use the option
to Show Names from a contact folder. That of course does not solve you
problem and as far as I can tell there are no sorting options in the
address book view - sorted by Name seems to be the only choice.

Not so. There are sorting options for the Outlook Address Book: right where
I said they are.
OP simply needs to set them and restart Outlook.

Well, all of this still does not help. I have been using the Contacts folder
all along. When I enter a new name, I make sure the File As box is
last-name-first. And I have even tried using last-name-first in the Full Name
box at the top, and still the name appears on the list, alphabetized by first
name. Can't find any options to change that.

Then read my post again. I told you where it is.
