Why does email appear in the Sent folder with a line through it?

When viewing emails in the SENT folder, a line appears through a few of them
(looks like the line that goes through a Task item when it is complete).
What are the reasons for a SENT email to have it marked in such a way?

The Sent Items folder you're viewing is in an IMAP account and you have
marked its contents for deletion.
