Is there known issues if I have muliple ost files saved to the local machine
even if the offline folders settings is pointed to another location for
Outlook 2003?
For example - I had set up a user with an ost file pointed to
c:/ci-data/jsmit.ost
Then there was an issue so we created another ost that pointed to the
default locations
C:\Documents and Settings\jsmit\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook
The e-mail is set up through exchange and runs in cached mode?
The issue was that the inbox would come up and immediatley run an inbox
update that would take up to 20 mins to run - once I got rid of the old ost -
it ran fine?

Thoughts?

That is a coincidence. When you start a new ost-file it always must do a
complete sync first. Apparently is was finished at the same time you deleted
the old ost-file.

the new ost file was created 5/12/08 I deleted the old one today - so I don't
think it was that - since the user is on e-mail everyday for 8 hour work days.

So the fact that there are 2 ost files is no big deal?

Thanks!

No, since Outlook will only connect to the 1 ost-file that it is configured
with. It completely ignores the other one because it is not programmed to
look around for any other ost-files on its own.

Forgive me for butting in, but a websearch just brought me here whilst researching multiple OST files.

I have 5 of them in my own C:\Users\<username> \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook folder, named outlook.ost and outlook0.ost to outlook3.ost.

Only outlook3.ost has a Date Modified older than today. All the others -- except the up-to-the-minute current outlook.ost have the same Date Modified, at about 30 mins after my Windows startup this morning.

There's /something/ going on...

Cheers all,
--Nev.

This means that your mail profile has been recreated several times. If
an OST with a name matching the mail profile resides in the folder where
OSTs get created Outlook simply appends a digit to the name. Old OSTs
for the same profile don't need to be kept as they cannot be accessed
any more and shouldn't contain anything you need. Just ask Outlook what
the name of the OST is. Right-click the root of your mailbox, choose
Properties, click the Advanced button, and select the Advanced tab. If
you're not opening other mailboxes, the "Open these additional
mailboxes" pane will be empty. Click "Offline Folder File Settings" to
see the OST's name. If you have other mailboxes open, there may be
other OSTs for them. I really don't know because I don't open other
mailboxes and can't look. You should be able to close Outlook and
delete any OST Outlook isn't referencing. They won't contain anything
you need and can't be used in any profile that's not the original one
that created them.
