I have a lot of people in my Contacts.

I keep them organized by assigning them to Categories.

When I create a new message, and click on the To: button, I would like to
not have to go through all my contacts. I would like to be able to select a
Category of contacts as possible addressees for that message.

The Categories feature is quite useful; I hope it will be finished soon.

The address book view is not intended to be your main data repository. Your
Contacts Folder is. That's why all sorting, grouping, and filtering
functions are built into the Contact Folder views--including grouping by
Category.
Start using your Contact Folders for selecting recipients. These functions
will only exist there, not in the address book view.

When I create a new message, or I forward a message, or I reply to a message
and I want to add recipients, I'm in a message folder (Inbox, etc.). In the
message window, I click on the "TO:" button to add recipients, and I get the
"Select Names:" dialog box. This is where I want to filter the names by
Category. It could be implimented just like the Contacts in PocketPC, where,
at the top of the list of names is a pop-up for All Contacts. I click on it
and get a list of Categories. I can click on any Category and the list of
Contacts is limited to Contacts that are members of that Category.

In Outlook Contacts, I can right-click on any contact and select "New
Message to Contact", but when I select multiple contacts I can't right-click
on them to get a New Message to Contacts" command. Also, the Contacts Folder
view is no help when I want to forward or reply to existing messages.

I do use the Contacts Folder as my main data respository, but when I'm
working with messages I want to have the same convenient features of Outlook
Categories for addressees that I have when I'm working with Contacts.

Just telling you what is and that it's not likely to change. Not sure what
you mean, either. You can most certainly select multiple recipients from the
Contacts Folder.
For several versions now the Outlook Address Book has been deprecated and
the Contacts Folder promoted.

Yes, that's why...

Yes, but when you have multiple contacts selected and you right-click on
them, there's no "New Message to Contacts" command in the context menu.

Suggestions have been made for the last several versions. The Outlook
Address Book remains deprecated, even into the next version. Votes will not
matter.
"New Message to Contact" remains active in the Actions Menu.

This really sucks. I've been trying to switch my boss over to outlook for
years for many obvious reasons, most importantly, he wants to keep every
email ever sent to him and he can't figure out how to use the delete button!
:). Anyway....I got him to start using it until he couldn't sort in the
address book view, so now we have to go back to Outlook Express, which he can
sort in this view. It really doesn't make sense that O Express would do it
and Outlook won't.

It may be easier for the rest of the world, but for the technologically
ignorant it only makes things worse for the people who support them.

Indeed. Anyone who insists on using the address book view will not be happy
with Outlook. On the other hand, there's a reason they've moved us away from
the notion of an address book. Contact Folders have far more robust features
for filtering, sorting and searching for Contacts. There's nothing wrong
with using Outlook Express for users who need only basic email functionality
without the PIM features.
