I recently upgraded a users computer, and in so doing
wanted to move his important files to his new computer.
All desktops use Windows XP Pro/Office XP, we're using a
Windows 2000 Server with Exchange 2000 Server all patched
to the latest.

I performed an export of this users Outlook info and
placed the pst file on the server, then after installing
the new computer I imported that same pst file. Just about
everything came over fine, except for a distribution list
he had setup in his Personal Address Book, under Contacts.
This Dist list had about 200 external recipient addresses
in it. The name of the list transferred, but the list was
empty.

I setup his old computer and logged in as him and can
still see the distribution list with all the names still
in Contacts when logged into Outlook. I can't seem to find
out how to export the list. I even tried to open the list
and perform both a 'Move to Folder' and 'Copy to Folder'
and both actions produce an error.

Can someone let me know how to export just the list, to
maybe an access or excel file? Anything would help at this
point. The next step is to do it manually. Pen and paper,
Argh!

Thanks in advance,

I don't understand what you mean by "except for a distribution list
he had setup in his Personal Address Book, under Contacts..."
The DL should have been in the Contacts Folder, not a PAB. A PAB is a file
entirely separate from a PST. You should have imported the PAB into the PST
first.

OK, let me see if I can explain this dilemma. I'm sitting
at the illed computer, before when I composed the original
message I was at my office pulling the info from memory.

The original user was using Windows ME and Office 2000 in
a W2K/E2K server/domain environment. When the user
accessed his address book he could access the Global
Access List from the W2K directory, the Outlook Address
Book which includes the Contacts folder, and All Address
Lists which includes folders for All Contacts, All Users,
All Groups and Public Folders.

Inside the Contacts folder of the Outlook Address Book, he
had several DL's setup. Inside Outlook in the Folder view,
you could see the same Contact folder, but this one
particular DL had all the external mail addresses missing,
it also had the Group symbol missing(the other DL's in
contacts had the Group symbol showing next to the name of
the DL- two heads). The only way you could view the list
participants was to open the Address Book, then the
Contacts folder, then the point to the DL name and click
properties, then another window would pop up with a list
of all the external mail addresses.

When we put his new computer(WinXP/OfficeXP) in place we
perfomed an export of his Outlook files, all his Outlook
Address Book Contact folder entries got saved except this
one DL. The name of the DL is visible but all the external
email names are missing from the list, not viewable at
all, in fact the small little group symbol for DL's is
missing also.

Inside the property list of this DL, there were a few
other tricks I tried to move the DL. Under File there are
two selections: 1) Move to Folder and 2) Copy to Folder. I
tried to create a new folder under All Public Folders that
holds Contact items. Then I tried to Move/Copy this DL
into this newly created folder for contact items but this
is the message I receive: 1) on Move: 'Could not complete
move. The items may have been already moved or deleted.'
2) on Copy: 'Out of memory or system resources. Close some
windows or programs and try again.' Neither of which is
true, because I can see that the contents are neither
moved or deleted and I've closed down everything except
this program.

Anyway, I probably used the wrong term with PAB, it should
have been OAB.

So, I've tried so many things and can't seem to get this
list into the users new computer. Any ideas? Where might
this list reside? Can I access it through the command line
or somewhere in the registry.

Thanks for your help. If I can answer any other questions,
please ask.

Jeff

Sounds like the DL was corrupt. Do you know if it was created from Contact
entries that reside within the user's mailbox or if it just contained
addresses that had been entered directly into the DL. What is the message
class for this DL?

I'm not too sure on that but I believe it's probably a
little bit of both contact entries from within and added
addresses directly into the DL. I'm not sure how to check
on the message class you're asking about. How do I check
that? Thanks

Just use Field chooser to add the Message Class to a Table View of your
Contacts.
