How do I insert a pause in a contacts phone number

My computer and phone are connected. I use the "call" button for a contact
to cause the phone to dial that contact. I want to insert a "pause" in the
phone number, so that I can autodial extensions, put in voicemail codes etc.
How do I do this?

it uses the standard modem commands - so try a comma.
