I was synching a notebook from my tablet to my laptop when I received a sync
error. The notebook has synched successfully several times since I set it
up. I had disconnected the tablet from the network today, added material to
two section in the notebook, and then re-connected to the network, at which
point I received this error.

I viewed the error under File | Sync | Notebook Sync Status, which gave a
window with two tabs. The "Sync Progress" tab had the message:
"Summor 06 Notebook ((Daves-8500 shared documents\Summer 06 Notebook) ! Some
sections in this notebook could not be synchronized."

The status tab entitled "Errors" had the following message:
"5:30 PM \\Daves-8500\daves-8500 shared documents\Summer 06 notebook\FN350.one
This OneNote section file appears to be corrupted. OneNote may be able to
repair the file. Avoid adding content to this corrupted section. (Error
code: 0xE000012E)"

The reference to the laptop share and the notebook name are correct. The
.one file name is indeed a section in this notebook.

I tried a re-sync with the same result. I tried closing the notebook,
opening it again, and synching it, with the same result. I ran Help | Office
Diagnostics, with no problem other than a message about a conflicting version
of Outlook existing.

What should I try next? Do I need to do anything to get ON to attempt the
referenced repair? Should I select all pages in the section and try to copy
them to a new section? Right now, I'm not editing the section at all.

Update:

When I opened the section in question on the tablet, there was a message at
the top of the first page that said "click here to attempt repair," or
something like that. I clicked & waited about 10 minutes. I received a
completion message stating that the file was repaired, but it should be
checked manuakky for errors. I looked at it, but some of the pages at the
end of the section would not load and gave an error: "an unknown error
occurred while attempting to open this page." On another page in the same
section, I saw the error message, "This page was added by another user and
has not yet been fully synched. The page content will be available after it
has been synched." On yet another page in the section, when I looked at it I
got the message, "Loading... Please wait." After 10 minutes, I stopped
waiting.

But wait! There's more...

After I gave up on the section in question, I looked at other sections in
the same notebook. Of 4 other sections, 2 of them also had the header
message that the file was corrupt and click here to attempt repair. Now I'm
worried that the whole notebook might be hosed.

Advice for preserving the content for safety? For addressing the errors?

Thanks,
Dave

Did you go the section? Does it show any yellow bar with a corruption
message?
What happens if you press F9 and wait (F9 triggers a sync)? Does closing
and reopening OneNote help?
Are you using Windows Offline Files?

Copy everything over to a new notebook and then try to go through all
the errors?
BTW, the message doesn't update itself easily. After you clicked repair,
go to a different section and come back to see if the message
disappeared.

If you have errors on files please submit the file to Connect
(http://connect.microsoft.com/onenote).

Note if you have private or confidential data please don't submit it, but
otherwise we look forward to all reports of corrupted files so that we can
analyze them and fix them.

Thank you!

I'll try the copy paste of all pages in the section to a new section & let
you know what happens.

Hi Chris,

I tried to copy all of the content pages from the corrupt section into a new
section but I could not figure out how to do it. I selected all pages &
then Edit | Copy but when I opened up a new notebook and section, I couldn't
select Paste. I did not try a drag & drop.

However, after I selected the attempt-repair option at the top of the
section again, and let it run, and repeated this 3 times, the error message
vanished! I could read all pages and both close & open the notebook without
further corrupt section errors. The problem seems to have gone away -- for
now.

I want to thank you for attempting to help. I didn't even get a copy of the
corrupt file to the Connect folks because the file size was too big.

OneDave shared these words of wisdom:

God to hear that you could solve the problem meanwhile.

Why did you not try the latter?
I remember that when I last had this problem it worked fine.

Should it happen again, just try it.

UPDATE: Microsoft accepted this as a OneNote 2007 error an repaired it for
future release.

Thanks everyone for your help.
