I have been using OneNote to keep important project documents that I can
refer to quickly. It is great for inserting Word or Excel files as a picture
but I can't find a way to insert a PDF file as a picture. I can insert the
link to the file but I would much rather have the image on screen in OneNote

You could use the OneNote ImageWriter PowerToy. You'll find a link to it

Isn't the "microsoft office document image writer" (that comes with OneNote)
the same thing as the, "OneNoteImageWriter" that everyone talks about? or
what is the difference?

No - the OneNote ImageWriter was a powertoy developed by a third-party.

I'm using the "Send to OneNote 2003" that came with the Educational Pack.
Seems to work pretty well. (except the file sizes are a bit larger.)

This is a Adobe button to push. When you print to OneNote from Adobe, the
print status box comes up. At the bottom is the "Advanced" button, push it.
On the next page, there is a "Print as Image" box under the Custom Settings.
This did it for me.

I do not know which application (Acrobat or Reader?) you are using an
which version.
It's not necessary to select printing as an image on my system.
Just selecting the ON printer, setting portrait or landscape and
clicking on the OK button is all I need to do.

BTW: after printing larger PDFs to ON the "Printout Manager" Powertoy[1]
is of great value to get things sorted.
