Recently I logged into my Facebook account and then noticed that my caps lock was on. So I tried to log in again with and without capslock on. I got in both times. Then I tried to log in with the first letter of my password in uppercase and the rest in lowercase. Again, I got in. How is this even possible? Does Facebook keep a cookie for the password or something?

I don't think there are any cookies per your question. It is likely that the password hashing and storage is as standard as you would expect. The alternate passwords are probably generated from the password submitted, via the login form, and not stored as alternates on the back end.

Facebook then stores their respective hashes (which are different, of course) so that if a user user types his password (after reset), the hash of the new password is compared to all these stored hashes: Facebook can tell you then if your new password is similar to the previous one or not.

We hash each password using our internal password hashing algorithm and the unique salt for that person. Since Facebook stores passwords securely as hashes, we can't simply compare a password directly to the database. We need to hash it first and compare the hashes.

The technical details are given in brief but Facebook does use hashing with unique salts. The plain text passwords are hashed with undisclosed algorithm(as Facebook has not revealed it) and then prefixed or postfixed with unique salt and compare it. If it matches then the user gets the green light otherwise no. In case, of similar password, may be Facebook use pre-computed and predicted hashed passwords like replace a with or i with 1 or replacing alphabet/s with Upper or lower case. It's given here in brief.

I'm implementing facebook login with firebase for my application. The objective is to develop a logic that the user can login with email/password provider or facebook provider. As i started developing, i found two ways to do what i want:

User can sign up with facebook and email/password. But firebase won't register the facebook data for the email/password provider. Which means, when i try to get the email from the current user, i have to specify the provider that have the email attribute (facebook provider). Email/password provider returns an empty email

Is there something i'm missing? I tried using updateEmail() when user signs up with facebook but it just updates the email attribute for facebook provider. Do i really have to make the user insert his password to create a link between the two providers?

My wife has a new iPad. It was setup from her old iPad. All apps on the new iPad recognise their respective passwords... except for the FB app. The app on her old iPad still accepts the password after logging out and logging back in. As does FB on the web. But not the app on the new iPad. Why would that be?

It may have also been locked if there was an account issue, meaning a reset would be required. Since this is with the account password in a third-party app, please contact Facebook for help resetting the password. Once reset, the new one should work. If not, contact Facebook for help with their app: How to contact an app developer - Apple Support

After Heartbleed I changed my Facebook password but now my iPad does not recognise it and I cannot connect to Facebook from some of my apps (I can login to Facebook) but they all work on my iPhone. I tried a rest on my iPad but it is still the same. When I go to my Facebook settings it constantly asks for my password and when I enter it I get a message saying it is wrong? I'm at a loss as I have no problems on my iPhone. HELP!

I tried all those several times with no joy and in a fit of complete and utter frustration I did a factory reset. I have to say this is totally unacceptable it means if I want to change my password in future I need to first delete my account from my iPad and create it again after password has been changed. Not good enough Apple you need to deal with this yesterday! Your products are expensive and should have better support than this.....the problem has been around for months it seems so no excuse!

I changed my Facebook password and deactivated the Facebook account. The email that was associated with FB was my Facebook email. I have attempted 30-50 times to reset my FB password bu having a code SMS sent to my cell phone and I have not received any code.

I keep seeing suggestions to delete the Facebook app, but WHY do I have to delete an app does works perfectly? Why not fixing the bug that keeps asking me for my password? Is this a reflection of caring for the customer?

When you use your PayPal account to process transactions using Facebook, Facebook will sign you up for Automatic payments with them. This is why you are not prompted for your password each time. If you want to cancel this, please click here.

Hi Petepowergen, did you try the solution I found re going into paypal settings - account - and cancelling all the ones that say they have pre approved payment? I was shocked when I found that about 8 companies, most of which I had only used once, had automatically given themselves pre approved payment! I too gave up with paypal customer service, apparently morning, early afternoon and late afternoon are all outside working hours. I got my most helpful answer by posting the problem on facebook. Good luck

Many thanks for your help. I have now disconnected the paypal link from my facebook account. I hadn't been aware there was such a link, and I am sure many others would be in the same situation. Thank you

Except that I was never asked to actually confirm that I am the owner of that Facebook account. I was never asked to type in my password, Facebook has yet to send me an e-mail telling me that I've logged in from a different site/client like it usually does, and now I can apparently log in here by simply clicking the "log in" link. No password was ever asked for, so I'm left concluding that anyone who knows my e-mail could have signed me up, and could log in for me and pretend to be me.

I am trying to download the oculus rift app on my gaming laptop and it is asking me to put in my oculus password. I have forgotten it so I pressed the 'forgot password' button and it led me to a website wanting me to put my email in, and once I did it just said, 'You merged this Oculus account with a Facebook account. Please go back and log in with Facebook.' I logged in with Facebook, it didn't do anything. I cannot reset my Oculus password. Please help.

Hi sermarfacebook! We're sorry to hear you're having an issue with resetting your password. We'd be happy to look into this with you. Please send us a private message with the details of your issue as well as your account information (full name, alias, email on your account), and we'll move forward from there.

Hello, I have the same problem. I just get looped back to "login with facebook". If that was possible I would not need to reset my oculus password! So how on earth can I do this? The link to does not contain any information on this whatsoever.

This is driving me nuts....I want to set up Spotify on my SmartTV. When I try, it asks me for my username and password. Since I login to Spotify through Facebook, I can't give the SmartTV a username and password.

I found on Spotify that my account is not only linked to my Facebook account, but I've been given a 10 digit number as a username. However, when I try to reset the password for that "Spotify (ten digit #) Username" it asks for my current password. Obviously I don't have it because if I did, I wouldn't need to reset it. So I'm stuck.

How do I set up Spotify on my SmartTV if I don't have a password for my "Spotify (ten digit #) username" and I can't use my Facebook account to set it up on the SmartTV because it requires a Spotify username and Spotify password, not a facebook account???

1) Go to the link _url=/uk/account/set-device-password/

2) On the page that the link takes you to, log into Spotify using your Facebook log in details

3) You will be taken to your Spotify subscription page. Look at the very top right hand corner of the page. You will see a Spotify account number. It is a ten digit number. Make a note of this, as it will be your Device Spotify log in username.

4) Next scroll to the bottom of the page and create a password. Make a note of this, it will be your Device Spotify password.

5) Use the username and password to log into your Spotify/Device account.

6) Enjoy playing and listening

Recently I begrudgingly created a Facebook account after receiving an invite to a group that is work related and I couldn't really say no. Everything was working fine but I decided to change my password and since then it has been a pain to log in using 1Password. Every time I try it tells me the password was updated and it's not accepting the password from the browser extension but if I go and copy the password from the main application it works fine.

The strange thing is that I can press on the anchor symbol and copy it from the browser extension which works. It just won't log in normally and tells me I have used an old password, so it feels like a bug in 1Password that is not updating the password properly.

I've never had a problem before across hundreds of websites and changed the password on many of them. It's still a mystery why 1Password was continuing to insert an old password, even though it had clearly updated inside the main application. Chances are it won't happen again.
