OneNote over LAN

I can't seem to set up a shared session over my LAN which
uses address in the 192.168 blah blah range. Is it
because these are "private" IP addys? How can I resolve
this so that I may create a shared session within my home
network?

Is the other node with which you are trying to set up the shared session
also on your home network, and does it also have an address in the
192.168.0.0 range? Problems with the private address ranges only enter
into things when tying to communicate to public IP addresses.

Assuming that both nodes are on the same internal network, look at the IP
properties of both machines. Do they have the same subnet mask and default
gateway? Do they have similar address (which should only differ by the
last number or possibly the last two numbers)?

Can you otherwise clarify the setup you have? We'll be better prepared to
answer.

The addresses are:
192.168.1.107 on one
192.168.1.105 on another
They both have the same Subnet and Gateway settings.
OneNote is assigning a port of 2302 when starting a
session. The host machine then has the address of
192.168.1.107:2302. I then try to JOIN a session with
that address from the other machine and.... No Go, it
times out.
I am however going through a router and using my cable
service providers DNS servers. The router is a Linksys.
Do I need to change something in the router/firewall?

Also, I can access each machine, one from the other, both
ways, with no problem over the LAN without using OneNote
(simple file sharing). I just don't understand why the
session sharing isn't working. OS is XP Pro with SP2.

Which operating systems are involved, and are you running a third-party
firewall on either machine? If you're on Windows XP, do you have SP2
installed yet? That should cover any firewall issues.

I got it working by installing "Peer to Peer" in Network
Services (Control Panel - Add Remove Programs - Windows
Components - Network Services)

I'm not sure as to what security issues I may have
created by doing this however.

Update:

I also had to disable "Zone Alarm".
I could not get OneNote to work with Zone Alarm running
even if I entered IP's and ports used with OneNote.

Weird.

Zone Labs states that it's firewall does not work with
servers, so I suppose this would be a type of Server
Envrionment?

I don't use ZA nor have I read the statement you refer
to, but they may mean that they either don't support the
level of granularity necessary to run services a
workstation, or that they only support configuring which
outbound services you want your applications to access
and that they block *all* inbound traffic (whether
malicious or not).
