Up until now, I have been unable to install the SP2 patch for Office XP.
Office Update determined that the SP2 patch had been downloaded but not
installed on my system. Today, I attempted to install the 2 new October
patches for Word & Excel. But, because the SP2 patch had not been installed
yet, Office update would not install the October Word and Excel patches
either. So, after spending a couple of hours looking around for a fix for
this, I finally found one that works. (Thanks, Jim) At least the fix worked
on my system anyway.

If you cannot install the Office XP SP patch due to Error 1635, then try
this:

First, you need to go to C:\Program Files\OfficeUpdate\Cabs\511072. Now,
unzip this cab file using Winzip. This should unzip a folder called
511072.MAINSP2op. There is only 1 file located in this folder. It is named
MAINSP2op.msp. Just double-click this file. This will start the Windows
Installer and as long as you have already downloaded the SP2 patch, it will
correctly install and reconfigure Office XP.

In my case, after the installer finished, it did not ask to restart Windows,
which seemed strange to me, but it worked. Give the installer time to
finish. Then, after it's completed, load Word and click on Help/About
Microsoft Word. You should see SP2 listed near the top of the window. You
can check Excel the same way.

After installing the SP2 patch, go to
http://office.microsoft.com/productupdates/
and check for updates. You should now be able to download and install the
Word and Excel October patches.

Good luck,
Tony
