After installing the latest patches and updates nothing works anymore and I
had to install the "old" Office 2000.
I get when installing, repairing or changing the configuration always the
error message " ...this patch paket can not be opend..." and the log file
it rturns the error code = 1635. The installer program fails to run.
Can anybody help me ?
>> which patch is meant ?
>> should I delete the office xp and install it again ?
>> is this possible with the new activation program ?
Thanks in advance
Dieter
What type of problems did you have after installing
Office XP updates and what method/source did you use
for installing?
On Activation, if it's an OEM copy then it's tied
to the hardware it was first installed on. If it's
a boxed, store retail copy activation by phone may
be needed, but it shouldn't be a problem.
The 'patch package' (.MSP file) issue may be this one:

Since upgrading Win2K to WinXP, I've had no Office 2000 icons (for Word,
Excel, etc.) on my desktop. Also, those programs have not been listed in
the Start menu, even though I could open them from Explorer (clicking on the
.exe files) or by Opening an Office document.
Yesterday I decided to fix the problem. I inserted my original O2K SR-1
CD-ROM, and hit a series of stone walls. Autorun didn't. Add/Remove
Programs would neither Change nor Remove O2K, always giving me that message
about a Patch product not working. Finally, I gave up and made the one-hour
phone call (my nickel) to MS Office Tech Support. The final word - from the
upper-level tech called in to help - was to live with it, because fixing it
would take an hour or two of extensive Registry surgery. He said Microsoft
knows about the problem, and it can be fixed, but no simple solution has
been posted because it is much too complex. :>(
After I hung up the phone, I came here and found this thread. I clicked on
your URL for the MSKB:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q295823 - and there
was my problem with the simple fix. This morning, I fixed it within a few
minutes. Then, I reinstalled O2K (took only a few minutes), then ran Detect
and Repair (which took longer) and confirmed from Office Update that my
installation is current. My programs are in the Start menu and a couple of
mouse drags put Word and Excel back on my desktop. I'm happy. ;<)
Thanks again.
