The option to check for Office updates is no longer found as an option on the
left side of the page - just Microsoft updates.

Microsoft updates will get Office updates as well as Windows updates that
are available for any of those installed programs or OSs.

It is and was an option on Windows XP Update to install Microsoft Update on
updater version 6 to combine the two.

That is incorrect. Microsoft Update has never included Office 2000.
Quote from Microsoft Update FAQ:
"Do I still need to get updates from Office Online or use Office Update?
No, if you’ve installed Office 2003 or Office XP products. If you use Office
2000 products or if your computer has a per-user installation of Office
products, you should still get updates from Office Update."

The link Tburg was referring to was on this page:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/default.aspx

There us to be a 3rd option under updates: Office Update
It would scan for updates and allow you to DL and install them. It
disappeared about a week ago and I haven't been able to find it anywhere
else. All the other office 2000 update links just lead to a list of all
updates but don't tell you which ones you need.

I us to use it all the time. I have a few offices that still use Office 2000
and have little reason to upgrade. Guess Microsoft is trying to force the
hand :(

OK, I stand partially corrected. Haven't used O2K for a while and it is now
out of support (last fix was 3/08) like O97 is so for those systems I have
that have O97 installed I know that they are updated as far as they will
ever get so I don't search for updates the manual way. O02 and up are
included in the Microsoft update so I don't have to search for them. When
they go out of support totally then I routinely download all patches and
save them in case I need them later by looking at the updates already
applied to working versions of the software.

There is no more Office Update. It has been discontinued. Windows and Microsoft
Update has taken it's place.

Don't believe. Try Office Update and see if it will scan

As far as Office 2000 Updates go there is no more. Office 2000 has been discontinued
along with the end of the extended support

Actually, you can still access Office updates without using Windows or
Microsoft Update. I do that at work to make sure that my version of Office
is fully patched. WU and MU are blocked by IT policy.

Whether you can still download Office 2000 updates manually - don't know but
it's worth trying.

Maybe there over the pond Jo-Ann but not here on N America. You cannot access the
Office Update scanning for Updates anymore here. You can of course access the Office
Update site without the Scanning for Updates feature which has been removed

I'm in the US and I just scanned my work system the other day. Maybe what
I'm calling Office Update is something different than you mean but it
scanned my computer and told me which Office 2003 updates I needed.

It has gone. It was removed. Give the link where you say it scans for Office Update
JoAnn.

Let me try to find it now - stay tuned.

Looks like I will have to get the link from my work computer. This one won't
let me - it keeps throwing me into Microsoft Update.

I can still scan using
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/maincatalog.aspx
...probably because I still have the applet on my computer that scans.

This hasn't been well rolled out. The MS update site says to use Office
Update for Office2000 Apps. The Office Update site says it has been
discontinued. Do these people talk to each other??

If Office2000 support has been discontinued and there are no more updates,
can't someone just say so ???

OK..... but on my computer... and it seems I'm not alone from what I've read
here.... that link automatically triggers an Office Update applet that was
previously downloaded, checks for updates (which it doesn't seem like it
would find as there are no new ones) and responds that I am up-to-date

That makes me think that once Windows or Microsoft Update is installed, it
automatically reroutes the request. I'll post the link I use tomorrow and
we'll see if it does the same thing.

Ricks link worked for me - took me straight to MS Office Update page. Once I
installed the applet it provided - it worked perfectly. It reported I still
needed 2 updates - Office 2000 SP3, and Office 2000 SP3 for Office 2000SR-1,
and installed them for me (am rebuilding a computer for a User who does not
want to buy the newer product).
By the way, I am also using the normal Windows Update site on this PC. It
works for other MS products I have installed but DOES NOT show I need any
Office 2000 updates - I assume because discontinued.
I hope they don't get rid of the MS Office Update page.

They think they have already gotten rid of the Office Update site!!

It's almost funny how poorly executed and communicated this was.... sad,
really.

If you look on the page the link brings you to it says "Starting August 1,
2009, Microsoft will discontinue support for Office Update".

If you go to the "Windows" update page click on "Microsoft Updates", go
through the process and that will scan for everything Microsoft on the
system. It will go to that site going forward from that machine instead of
the Windows update page.

Okay, I tried to find the site today. I had to get there in a roundabout way
but did get there.

I had to go to "Downloads for office 2003". I selected “Show Installed
Office Updates” on left side, ran the check to see which ones are installed.
Top option says Return to the Office Update Catalog. Click on it and it runs
the Microsoft Office Update.

Now..........when I try the same thing on this system (Vista w/ Office
2007), I get to a page that says "Starting August 1, 2009, Microsoft will
discontinue support for Office Update. To continue getting the latest
updates for Microsoft Office products, use Microsoft Update. For more
information see the FAQ."
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/FX101859091033.aspx

The FAQs are located at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/FX010402221033.aspx

Looks like I may have reached the end of updating my copy of Office at work.
Crap.

This sux. I don't like gettin' my updates all in one place or at one time.
Once again Microsoft THINKS they know what people want and need. When will
they let us be in charge of our own computers?

I'm also fed up with BIG BROTHER telling me what i have to load on my PC,so
next time i build/rebuild my system it will be with NONE Microsoft
products.By being a bully Microsoft will force consumers to look elsewhere
for operating systems etc, their lose as most are available for free.

For technically sophisticated users, the option to only check for and
install updates that you choose is always preferred.

However, remember that you are in the minority of users. Most users turn on
the computer they bought with a trial version of an AV package that long
expired, and expect everything to just work. They appreciate that vendors
automate update checking and installation (not just Microsoft but Adobe and
others) so they don't have to worry about it. Otherwise, computers in
probably 75% of the world would never get patches, updates, or fixes. Ever
wonder why Conficker is not more widespread?

Having an option to toggle the automatic check/download may be a good idea,
but most people would not even think to check to see IF there is an option,
nor would they toggle it off.

Or they would bug you for advice constantly.

Further Info:
After all the MS Office 2000 patches were installed and I rebooted - I went
back to the web page to see what it would do. Now I do get the discontinued
message:

"Starting August 1, 2009, Microsoft will discontinue support for Office
Update. To continue getting the latest updates for Microsoft Office products,
use Microsoft Update. For more information see the FAQ."

I assume this is because I now have all the patches, and MS Office 2000 is
out-of-support so there will be no more patches.
