I have the same problem with templates created in Word 2000. Have you found
any workarounds?

I am having the same problem just in the middle of my PhD thesis writing! It
has been a word 2007 document from the begining.
I wonder if anyone tried to use the hotfix Microsoft provided.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;970942&sd=rss&spid=11377

There's a warning message about the hotfix which scared me a lot:
"Installing the incorrect hotfix can cause damage to your system. "

Thanks
