I have one computer in my office who's Office Shortcut Bar is acting very
very strangely. The computer is running win98 wiht office 2000 sr1 on it
(tho this problem started before i applied the sr1 update, and still
continues afterwards).
Any of the buttons on the shortcut bar force the "open with" dialog box to
come up and ask what program i would like to open the file with. But it says
like "what program would you like to use to open 'winword.exe'"... it
doesn't seem to care that they are .exe files.
I have tried removing and recreating the buttons, removing and recreating
the toolbars, and uninstalling/reinstalling the whole shortcut bar app. All
to no avail.
All the rest of the shortcuts to the same files (on the desktop, in the
start/programs menu, etc) work without any problems.
Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Tim Mulholland

You might want to have a look at this MS KB article, it may help:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q163/6/47.asp

You can also get this article by sending an E-mail with a subject of
"Q163647" (without the quotes) to msh...@microsoft.com.

This link should automate that for you:
mailto:msh...@microsoft.com?subject=Q163647

Hope this helps.

Milly:

I have exactly the same problem which you replied to -- in fact I posted
virtually the same question to this newsgroup over a week ago and on ZDnet more
than two weeks ago. The problem is not that Quickview is launched, but that the
"Open With" dialog box opens. The quickview registry keys referred to in the MS
KB article do nothing for this problem -- I've tried it. As I said a week ago,
I've seen at least one other registry solution for which I could not find the
relevant keys.

BTW, the message from Volunteer Emergency is the fourth I've seen on this
subject in this and other newsgroups. I've also seen a ZD article which
reported that MS has said "they're working on it..."

Any other ideas???

Sorry - fresh out of ideas. If MS says that they are working on it, I will
keep checking the Knowledge base library for answers. You may also want to
check in there about once a week to see if a workaround has been posted.
