Ok, if indeed we all have the same problem, I have a (temporary) solution.
After p!ss!ing away the better half of a day. I discovered that the problem
is tied directly to the sub-option of installing the MS Excel program
files. So here's the steps to get around it somewhat gracefully:
- Run setup.
- When you get to the dialog to select the type of installation you want,
click Custom.
- When the dialog comes up with all the various components you can install,
uncheck everything. Don't continue yet!
- Click the Excel option then click Change Option.
- Click only the first option, Microsoft Excel program files. Then click OK
followed by continue.
- Proceed as normal through the install.
- Install will fail as we have all experienced. Don't worry the solution
follows.
- Rerun setup.
- Once again select a Custom install. However, this time only uncheck what
you really don't want (or nothing at all if you want everything). Don't
continue yet!
- Click Excel again then click Change Option.
- Uncheck Microsoft Excel program files and ignore the warning. Click OK
then Continue.
- Install should complete successfully.
For me, Excel appears to work ok. you will need to add an shortcut to it on
the Start menu since the first install will not successfully do this.
Enjoy,

Had a similar problem....
I was running OFFICE 3.1, but deleted it prior to installing Office 97. When I installed Office 97 (Upgrade), I had problems because it was looking for a registered copy of Office 3.1 (which wasn't there). I had to reinstall 3.1, register it on line, and then install Office 97. Went without a hitch...
Hope this works...
