Can anyone help me with following:
Installing Office 97 Upgrade from CD installation fails with "Acmsetup.exe.
This program has performed an illegal operation ....." Details refer to
Kernel32.dll at 0137:bff798e9. Used Typical installation. Seems to fail
at Word installation as Excel installed OK. Off97pro.STF not being placed
in Setup folder.
Installation is on an AST Premmia LX P/60 with 16MB RAM. Latest Win95
patches installed.
Had no problems installing Office 97 Upgrade on my second AST Bravo MS
P/100.
Can anyone help?
Regards,

Kevin

Kevin;

I'm sorry to see your having this problem but happy to see I'm not the
only one. I don't have an answer for you but I found your post while
looking for an answer myself. If I figure it out you will be the second
to know

I know this might sound strange but I ran into the same problem. What
I ended up doing was rebooting, went into the safe mode and started
word from there. I worked. I then re-booted my computer. When I was
on the normal win95 screeen I was then able to start word and the
rest. It worked for me.
BUT I recently had to format my C drive. I used partiion magic to
give me three drives. I tried to install office 97 once again but now
am getting "This will not setup on your version of windows" has me
confused. I have only WIN95 installed. Installed it clean. Anyone
have any idea's?

Ok, if indeed we all have the same problem, I have a (temporary) solution.

After p!ss!ing away the better half of a day. I discovered that the problem
is tied directly to the sub-option of installing the MS Excel program
files. So here's the steps to get around it somewhat gracefully:

- Run setup.
- When you get to the dialog to select the type of installation you want,
click Custom.
- When the dialog comes up with all the various components you can install,
uncheck everything. Don't continue yet!
- Click the Excel option then click Change Option.
- Click only the first option, Microsoft Excel program files. Then click OK
followed by continue.
- Proceed as normal through the install.
- Install will fail as we have all experienced. Don't worry the solution
follows.
- Rerun setup.
- Once again select a Custom install. However, this time only uncheck what
you really don't want (or nothing at all if you want everything). Don't
continue yet!
- Click Excel again then click Change Option.
- Uncheck Microsoft Excel program files and ignore the warning. Click OK
then Continue.
- Install should complete successfully.

For me, Excel appears to work ok. you will need to add an shortcut to it on
the Start menu since the first install will not successfully do this.

Enjoy,

I've also come across similiar problems when trying to install Office97 on
a hard drive which is running Win95 osr2. However, I receive the statment
that," this setup program is not supported by this version of windows"
which occurs immediately after clicking on the setup.exe file. Any help
would also be greatly appreciated.

Had a similar problem....

I was running OFFICE 3.1, but deleted it prior to installing Office 97.  When I installed Office 97 (Upgrade), I had problems because it was looking for a registered copy of Office 3.1 (which wasn't there).  I had to reinstall 3.1, register it on line, and then  install Office 97.  Went without a hitch...

Hope this works...
