I'm hoping someone can help orient me on this problem. Just recently,
every time I open Office Help (from any Office application), I get the
following error message:

"This page provides potentially unsafe information to an ActiveX control.
Your current security settings prohibit running contrls in this manner. A
a result. this page may not display correctly."

This error message pops up on ANY AND EVERY page I open in Help -- very
annoying!

I really have no idea why this is happening. I found an article in the KB
that might be related -- Q262767 - OFF2000 Update Available for Office
2000 UA Control Vulnerability.htm -- but I'm really not sure.

I've tried adjusting my security settings within Office and within IE all
to their default values with no effect. I tried "Initialize and script
ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to prompt in IE, and again it had
not effect.

Can anyone clue me in to why I'm getting this message. I wouldn't mind if
it only popped up when I first open Help, but since it pops up on every
help page I access, I'd really like to fix it.

Thanks!

The Office 2000 UA Control Update is causing your problem.
Unfortunately, there is no uninstall utility included with this patch.
The following is from the Microsoft site:
-------------------
After installing the patch, the "Show Me" function in Office Help will
no longer function. In addition, "pop-ups" in Office 2000 Help will no
longer work – "pop-ups" are text boxes that pop up when you put your
mouse over a specially-marked term.

Information on this patch is available from the following:

Thanks for the prompt response!

I was afraid this would be the case. Do you know any unofficial tricks to
uninstall it without having to pull the whole Office installation off and
reinstall?

Thanks again!

Hi David,

Hmmm, The UACtrl update normally wouldn't cause that. It basically disables
two items in Office Help - definition popups and 'show-me' examples. When
you're looking at the help files in Office 2000 it's basically Internet Explorer
being used with the .CHM (compiled help files). When it has trouble with
an ActiveX control it has a different error message after that update is
installed.

The Active X 'potentially unsafe' errors come from having a corrupt
or mismatched version of Comcat.dll installed by a program.

See if this article helps.

Well that second KB article seems to hit my problem exactly! I'll
definitely give it a try. Since it's the weekend, I won't get to try it
until Monday, but I'll let you know how it turns out. (The problem
afflicts my work computer but not my home computer ... and I almost
always apply the same security upgrades to both ... I wonder if that's
the Win2K file protection system at work there ... since my work
computer is WinNT 4SP5 while my home system is Win2K Pro).

Thank you very much again!

That was it! I followed KB article Q240092 and renamed what turned out to
be two different versions of Comcat.dll to Comcat.dll.old, reinstalled
IE, and voila! -- problem fixed!

Thanks for the help! I didn't understand the integration of IE to display
Office Help -- I'd never really thought about it I guess -- so I was
looking in the wrong area for the problem. Sure appreciate your
assistance!
