How exactly did you "upgrade online"? If you downloaded an installation
program to upgrade you should have saved the downloaded file. It is probably
no longer going to be available to you by download again. If you did this
on a network then you need to go back to the network to obtain the file.

If you still have the license email look on it to see if you see the letters
FPP or OEM or MLK on it. If not you probably won't be able to get a
duplicate. If you find the email and it says FPP that would be a retail
version and you can follow the link below for attempting to replace it. If
OEM or MLK you would need to go back to the company you purchased the
program from.

There is a Microsoft Office folder at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office. But I don't know where to look from there - or what to do?? Sorry to be such a nuisance - clearly I am not technically savvy.

If you didn't print out the email that the license key was enclosed in you
will be out of luck. Looks like it is time to purchase a new version of
Office (or use www.openoffice.org 's free Office clone).
You unfortunately now realize why you need to copy anything downloaded to a
storage media that is not destroyed by a computer crash. Emails should be
printed and saved, downloaded files are saved onto CD/DVD or other removable
hard drives.

Replacing the computer won't help you get Office running. You won't have it
on the new computer either. OEM versions of the productivity software
(Office) while it may be cheaper it is more expensive in the long run as you
can't move it to another computer. The place to purchase retail or update
versions of Office software is normally Amazon (they seem to have the best
prices normally.)
As for XP as an operating system, that would depend on the computer model
and manufacturer. I just saw a HP from PC Mall that ships with XP Pro as
the OS.

also purchased a case at the same time so be careful with that.)
Intel Core 2 Duo T6570 2.10GHz, 2GB 800MHZ DDR2 SDRAM, 250GB 5400rpm SATA,
15.6" LED-backlit, DVD+/-RW SuperMulti, Webcam, 56K Modem, Gigabit Ethernet,
802.11a/b/g/draft-n, Microsoft Windows XP Pro (Includes FREE Slip Case +
1GB Memory WITH Installation for 3GB Total Memory!) It won't have MS Office
as a free product, only a trial that will have to be uninstalled.
Looks pretty good for a deal. I have purchased from them before and have had
good service from them.
Thanks for updating us.
