When opening a Word 97 document in Word 2002 (SP2), I get
the error message - "Microsoft Visual Basic Error - An
error occurred while loading 'ThisDocument'. Do you want
to continue loading the project? If I answer Yes, nothing
happens and I am taken to a blank Word document. If I
answer No, the document seems to load, however I cannot
save the document, print it, or save as. I re-installed
Word 2002 on my system, and the same thing happens. Any
ideas? Thanks.

Hi John,

If it happens on a specific document then you are encountering a
malfunctioning macro stored in the document. Is this a document you
created?

Hi Beth,

No, the document was created by another user. I am able
to open the document in Office XP when I do a fresh
install of Office XP. I tried un-installing Office XP
from my workstation and re-installing ti, however this
did not work. I believe when you un-install Office XP,
Windows does not remove all Office XP files from your
system. this is where I think the problem lies. When I
created a new installation of Office XP on a new
workstation, the file opens fine. Thanks for you help.

Hi John,

The problem you are encountering has nothing to do with the Word
installation. The problem lies in what I suspect is a macro conflict either
in your Normal.dot or an add-in.

First see if the error occurs when you start Word using the /a switch. Go
to Start/Run and run:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

If the error doesn't occur then chances are the problem is due to one of
the following:

Corrupt Normal.dot or there are macros in your Normal.dot creating a
conflict with those in the document. Locate Normal.dot and rename it to
OldNormal.dot. Word will create a new one upon starting.

If this resolves the problem, any customizations can be copied to the new
Normal.dot via the Organizer (Tools/Templates and Add-Ins) Once this is
complete OldNormal.dot can be discarded. If the problem still exists then
you can delete the new Normal.dot and rename your OldNormal.dot to
Normal.dot.

Global template/add-in: Go to Tools/Options/File Locations and note the
location of the Startup folder. Exit Word and locate the Startup folder and
see if any files are placed in the folder. If more than one, move them one
at a time and try starting Word after each file is moved out of the folder
until you determine which one is causing the problem.

Add-ins may also be stored in your \Office\Startup folder which is located
in the Office installation path. You should check this folder as well.

Hi Beth,

Using the /a switch works great. The error does not come
up, however it stil appears even though I renamed the
Normal.dot file and moved everything out of the Startup
folders. I will keep playing with it. Thank you very much
for your help. Greatly appreciate it.
