I received an e-mail attachment titled "winmail.dat" that I can't open
-- my computer doesn't know what program to use. Office Professional
is installed on my computer.

When I open it in word, I get the following:

Contact the sender of the email and request that they resend it in HTML or
Plain text (rather than Outlook Rich Text). Even if you do open the .dat
attachment, you may find very little information that is of any value.

You might also want to review the following article:

Winmail.dat is the file format for Rich Text Formatting that is sent to a
non-RTF enabled client. Are you trying to read this using Outlook or
Outlook EXPRESS? OE does not support RTF formatting such as Outlook can
display.

Have the mail resent using plain text or even HTML.

Have the person resend it to you in plain text format. Or use the native
Outlook RTF format to read the message.
