when using Word97.

It;is all in autotext. So , a) you have disabled autotext or b) the specific
entry.

Hi, Rita: the replacement of usenet-style emoticons with the
equivalent symbols from the Wingdings font is achieved via the
Autocorrect feature.

If you go to Tools -> Autocorrect -> Autocorrect you should see
them near the top of the autocorrect list. Autocorrect is
disabled if you uncheck the "Replace text as you type" box
immediately above the list.
