Is there any way to autocorrect a document/spreadsheet after it has been
typed?

You could perhaps write a macro to do this, but the benefits might be slim. Once
the document is written, the spell-checker is the better course, unless you have
custom AutoCorrect entries to expand some abbreviated forms. In that case, you
could just do a search-and-replace.

What are you trying to achieve?

I've been doing the "search and replace" thing for many years. However, it
is very time-consuming. I would like a way that Word or Excel would
recognize these abbreviations and change them the first time I ran spell
check on the file.

AutoCorrect could be dangerous if used in this manner since you don't have an
easy way of confirming whether the appropriate replacement occurred.

If you have a standard list of strings for S&R, then a macro could handle all of
them at once.

I've never created a macro. Is it easy?

If you start by recording the macro (ie turning the macro recorder on and
manually doing all the search and replace operations) then you can do
surprisingly powerful things. Once you have recorded the macro, you can edit the
code behind it - which is a quick way to extend the functionality (e.g. adding
additional search strings)

I tried creating a macro and I got an error message asking for a password.
I don't have anything password protected so what's up with that?
