1. Your large files have graphics in them and when you Save As...Word
6.0/95 Word 97 is actually converting to RTF to preserve formatting and
other elements to allow other versions to open the file. Graphics are being
converted into the RTF stream and they can be HUGE. We're working on a
native .doc converter and we're also working on improving the compression
of Word 97's RTF output.
2. You have the Versions feature turned on and your files are huge. When
you save them as RTF they get unbearably huge. Check to see if this feature
is turned on by going to File | Versions. If it is on, turn it off, delete
the various versions, and then re-Save As...
Hope this helps,

The files have no graphics in them.
they are about 64K in length, pretty modest really. I'm just trying to save
them in a version before 97 so that I can deliver them to my customer. I've
run out of ideas.
I do not have Versions turned on.
I had a look at the crashed RTF output, and there is a very large graphic
in there. I haven't a clue what it is as it is not in the document.
I have had replies sent to my mailbox as a result of my original posting,
confirming that other people have this problem.
I'm beginning to suspect that the other bugs I've come across are related.
I'll do some experimenting. Please let me know if you'd like a bug report
and I'll send it direct, together with the files.
The part about a graphic in the RTF without a graphic being present in the
file is very strange. Do you have graphics in the file with the preview
turned off? What about watermarks that may not show up? Anyway, please send
the RTF if you can, maybe zip it up?
Thanks for your help on this,

When you try to save a '97 version as a '95 version (which I 'think' is what
you are trying to do... sorry but I missed your original posting)... have you
tried to Save it AS a "WORD6/95" type?
