Monitoring macro usage in corporate environment

Hi all,
I work for a rather large department (1500 PC). In last couple of
years, there was
a widespread of MS Word Macros for various purposes. These are mostly
developed by various DEV teams
and deployed to the PC with domain tools (GPO etc)

Our PA unit working on the new macro consolidation project is in need
of some statistical data (raw)
on which and how often are the macros really used.

We could release new versions of all the macros, and introduce new
procedure that would register itself
when macro is run. Obviously, that is not easy and a lot of work.

Is there any other way ? that comes to mind of some "automation guru"
here ?
Perhaps, using updated normal.dot with some code that could pickup on
this and report... ? (just fishing here)
