How can I back up my data NOT using MS Backup?

Hi all,

XPPRO SP1. I have GB's of data I need to backup. The data changes, so I need
to be able to do incremental backups. I don't want to use MS Backup since
that compressed data to a MS-format, and I've allready had "can not read,
archive damaged" messages on such archives. So, I need a stable product that
enables me to backup the original data without compressing it into a
specific, non recoverable, format. Of course, the software would need to be
able to set archive bits and use these bits in incremental/differential
backups. Does anybody know of a reliable product that can do this? I know
there are several sharewareproducts, I've tried some of them, but they
actually do not do more than comparing a source and a target directory
(using filedate or filesize), and then copying the different files. Total
commander can do that too, but what I'm looking for is a normal backup
program that uses the archive bits.

En je zou ook even de moeite kunnen nemen om je verhaal voor de NL

Fair enuff. MS Backup chains you to OS version too.

I'd explore command-line archivers such as the free InfoZip utilities.
The command line syntax usually includes things tio manage the
attributre bits, and you can shell the thing with a .bat to impose the
parameters of your choice, while passing others as parameters...

Shortcut (which passes "what to backup and where") ->
.bat (which passes the standard parameters you want) ->
archive engine (which does the work)

Incrimental backups can bite you, of course. One way out is a spare
HD connected via USB (e.g. adapters that use 2.5" HDs)

sterker nog: dat ik de regels juist volg...

En zolang de groep "maintenance" heet is het een internationale groep, ook
al hangt hij toevallig onder de nl.hierarchie. Niet alles is van
Nederlanders omdat er een Nederlandse stikker opgeplakt is.

Goed zo, je Nederlands ben je dus niet verleerd.
