I've tried to use Berkley's mpeg encodeur and to port it in C++ but I've a
problem :

Windows Media player 6.4 & 7.01 aren't able to calculate the total time of
the mpeg I've made.
Does anyone know were in my encoder this pb could come from ?

The Ligos Encoder will convert AVI to mpeg. They had a promo for
$49.95 - down from $179.95. It's not free, but it's a great deal if
you want it.

Not sure if link still works, but give it a try:

well ... it doesn't answer my question. I don't wanna use any avi2mpeg
encoder, I've got my own encoder and I want to use it inside my
applications. I'd like to know what does media player use in the MPEG format
to find the total duration of the MPEG.

What kind of MPEG?

1, 2, or 4?

If type 1, load it up into VirtualDub.
If type 2, go here:

http://www.mediaware.com.au/M2-edit.html

and download the eval version of M2Edit Pro,
and open your MPEG2 stream with it.

If you STILL don't see the duration, your encoder's
producing non-compliant streams (just becuz it'll play
does not make it compliant).

Go to
www.mpeg.org
download the specs for the stream
type you're creating (it's there, somewhere)
and start checking (stream header info would be
a good place to start).

As I think, you must install the mpeg codec.

Which type of MPEG do you use?

Windows Media would not support for MPEG2 fully.

MPEG-4 is very popular and is required to play a lot of AVI and MPG movies.
You can get it at:

MPEG4 is included in WindowsMedia
why do a lot of people use modified 3rd-party version?

A Lot of people use a modified 3rd-party version 'cause
- they're sometimes more optimized - thus faster.
- they're updated often, steadilty *becoming* more optimized or with better
filters / whatever.
- they think it's 'l33t' to use sw that's modified ripped MS-software :)
