New to windows media player, have allot of .mkv videos,
That WMP 11 is not playing.. Though WMP would download the needed
codec's,
And install them to play the video format (.mkv) ??

It would appear not.

How does one get the extension codec (.mkv) and added into media player
11
I can't even find the plug-in folder for media player.. infact,
There nothing in the menus likes preferences, to make changes, or add
codec in.

Thanks In Advanced

Richard

If you find a codec for playing a nonsupported file type, usually you
do not need to do anything on the WMP 11. You just download the codec,
and it is designed to go where it is needed. My WMP 11 does not
support .mkv. You may be able to find a codec that willl work for the
WMP 11 with enough search. However, I found that the free GOM player
does play .mkv. To play your .mkv videos until you can find a possible
codec for the WMP 11, just go to http://www.gomplayer.com/main.html
and download the free GOM player.

Forget about finding a plugin file in the the WMP11 etc. All you need
to know is that you have a WMP 11 installed and that it will not play
some file type that you wish to play.

Let me give you an example. WMP 11 will not play certain types of AAC/
aac+ files. Orban does have a free plugin/codec that will work on WMP
11. I suggest you install this plugin to see how you do it so you will
know what to do if you find a .mkc plugin that will work on WMP 11.
You likely will need it at some time, anyway. Go to http://www.orban.com/plugin/
and select to download the plugin. Be sure to note the name of the
plugin file which will be named Setup---something --.exe. You will
have to select where to download. Select to download under MyDownloads
which is found under MyDocuments. This is the natural place, but you
could download to nearly any directory you wish. After the plugin is
downloaded, it must be installed. Go to MyDocuments > MyDownloads and
find Setup ---something--.exe that you just downloaded. The double
click the icon to install the plugin. It will be installed into an
Orban directory it sets up in your program files which usually are on
the C-drive. It is not installed in the WMP or other players files. It
sets up what is needed to connect to WMP or other players.

Sometimes you get a plugin/codec that is zipped. In that case you have
to unsip it to get the .exe file that will install the plugin.

Thanks for the tip,
Will download this plugin, and still search for a .mkv plugin
Odd, that WMP doesn't just go out and find them, and install them
..
How does one access the preference menu for media player ?

TIA

Richard

I can confirm that GOM player is good for MKV.
In earlier versions GOM player wasn't brilliant, some framerate/sound
issues, but now it works just fine. It will prompt you to download a codec,
linking you through to a download page.
