Our local library subscribes to NetLibrary. As a library card holder I can
download audio books from the NetLibrary web site free and get a license to
use the files for 3 weeks, renewable once.

Unfortunately, the files are in .wma format and are DRM protected. I say
unfortunately because it makes troubleshooting this problem more difficult.

I have downloaded a couple of .wma files on my desktop and tried to play
them. I get a "codec missing error message." I click on the web help
button, it tells me I'm missing codec 161. I get codec 161 and install it
but it doesn't fix the problem.

I've listened to a couple of different .wma files from the library on my
laptop and don't have the missing codec problem. Where DRM muddies the
water is I can't play a file that's licensed on one machine on the other to
see if the problem is with the file or with the individual installation of
Media Player.

So...any suggestions how I can kick start Media Player to play the library's
.wma's?

Media Player 10

Update....

I moved one of the files that won't play on my desktop machine over to my
laptop. I had to relicense that book (you're allowed one renewal) but then
presto...it played.

So it's not the file...it WMP on my desktop.

Hope someone has an idea of how to get by that codec error message.

A: Are you using a Media Center PC?
B: What are the file versions of wmadmod.dll and wmvcore.dll?

No to media player PC. Straight forward P-IV 3.0 GHz with WinXP Pro.

wmadmod.dll 10.00.00.3646
wmvcore.dll 10.00.00.3802

Okay, this should be easy then - reinstall WMP from
http://windowsmedia.com/download
and you should be good to go. It looks like you reinstalled the codec
package (version 3646) on top of the newer player install (3802).
