I cannot delete e-mail messages in my inbox. They remain deleted for about 5
seconds, and then pop back on the screen.

Is this using MSN Explorer? If so, the following should help:

I believe that the problem happens if the index that keeps track of the messages
is screwed up or woefully out of date with the server version of the index. This
is commonly seen if you access your account with more than one computer - the
one that doesn't get used that often can get out of sync with the server for
older messages. I think that we need to delete the local index and let it
rebuild.
Rather than deleting, try renaming the index file.
You can find it here:
(in XP) C:\Documents and Settings\{userID}\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\MSN\db30\
(In Vista) C:\Users\{userID}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\MSN\db30\
The folders are hidden, so you need to have show hidden files and folders
checked in Windows Explorer options.
Inside this db30 folder, you will find files with an extension of .sdf
I believe (don't have MSN Explorer on this PC.) that the file name includes the
MSN User ID for each user on the system. Rename the .sdf file for the affected
account to .old and then restart MSN Explorer and log in with that ID. It should
rebuild the index. Now, try deleting the offending messages. If that doesn't
work, try moving the messages from the Inbox to another folder and then doing a
send/receive and finally deleting them from the other folder.

For future reference, the newsgroup that you should post to for MSN Explorer
issues is microsoft.public.msn.discussion
