When I try to access the hotmail page, I get the message, "Server
could not be found"

Has anyone heard anything from Microsoft/Hotmail about this?

John,

Hotmail is a secure site. For advice specific to problems with secure
sites, have a look at the first link - for general advice, have a look at
the second:

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers2.htm#secure_sites
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#dns

Also, make sure your computer has not been hijacked by spyware/foistware
which is being reported as causing problems. Run the latest Spybot and
BHODemon to check for that.

Also, make sure your computer's date and time are correct and that your
computer's regional settings are the same as those selected for your Hotmail
account.

j,

"has anyone heard anything from ms/sm about this?"

yes

 - "kelli" (you can read her contributions if you bother to scroll down) says:
"they (snotmail) contacted me...." (likely a bot response)

she goes on to say that "my isp says that they are aware of it and working to correct the problem" which, unless her isp is msn (not snotmail, and only msft in the good times) would be a bit of a feat but apparently kelli is easily appeased;

 - The "system status" joke reports "ALL SYSTEMS GO"

 - And then, of course, we have the village idiot baying at the moon with her typical cut and paste (please lord....just let me get ONE MORE post count) "it's a secure site" silliness.

You have two choices (well three actually, the third one being the most sensible).
Ask for a quick fix, somebody solve my problem for me, and you'll get exactly what you got....."it's a secure site" and if you give me enough hits I'll give you enough busy work to keep you occupied until the next time it decides to work. Oh, and don't forget to tell me "thanks" when it finally does start working on it's own because that's yet one more "count" for me; or;

You can spend a little time doing your own research.
15 or 20 minutes spent reading posts on this ng and the messenger ng on this same server should be enough to convince anybody where the problem lies.

Invest the 20 minutes and save yourself countless hours following the advice of the mvNOTp's who have clearly demonstrated, yet again, what their motives are.

In the end the result will be the same for you. It'll work when and if they get around to fixing it and not  a minute sooner. It'll quit working again tomorrow or the next day and the waltz will begin all over.

Silly boy. Such a basic misunderstanding. The icon disappears after
login - perfectly normal.

John - Hotmail is NOT a secure site (no more that any other ms/msn related sites/server).

That aside - Even if it were, being so would have NO bearing on your issue.
-Jim-[ Microsoft-MVP ]
With MSN, failure is not an option.
It comes bundled with the service.

Assuming that they ever did.  I, for one, am not buying the story that they did.  Every bit of the Nemesis fiasco was shmvp.

Sometimes I wish you would just go back to driving trucks!! I should not
have to explain this to somebody who has apparently been around computers
for so long.

Hotmail is a secure site, SSL protocols must be negotiated during log-in.
If a computer has problems with said protocols (secure sites) then a users
will be unable to access their Hotmail account.

Silly Girl. The icon disappears because the site isn't a secure site. Are you trying to say that IE can't tell a secure site from an unsecure site? It sure doesn't place a secure site symbol anywhere, does it?
