I am using MSN messenger 7.5. It may be the same with windows live. open messenger window> click on tools> click on options> click on general> uncheck run messenger when I log on to windows> click apply at bottom.

Dave, I also had Windows messenger and had it configured so that it would not start up. But when I had to replace my router, I started having problems with MSN Messenger signing me off and back on all the time. It was suggested that I upgrade to Live Messenger and it solved my problem, but now I can't seem to stop it from starting when Windows comes up. I tried the steps you mentioned, but there is no option to run messenger.

You can try downloading start-up inspector and see if it comes up as a start up item then turning it off from the start up application list. It looks like it does on my list of start up applications. I have it disabled. You can get it here. Be careful what you turn off. http://www.windowsstartup.com/download.php
I make no promises or guarantee's about any programs or application of them. Use at your own risk.

In the latest version of Windows Live Messenger, the option is exactly the same, but there's an extra step if you are not signed in. Click Help - Show Menu Bar. Then the path is as Dave pointed out below. -steve
