Which method of connection is best, especially for games?

Easy. USB!!!! The sample rate (130 Hz) is much higher than on the PS/2
port (40 Hz) which translates into a more precise movement. There is a
program called PS/2 Rate which allows you to set a PS/2 mouse to run at up
to 200 Hz, but I have found that if you are using a USB to PS/2 adapter to
connect your mouse to the USB port, this program doesn't work. It worked
great on my old PS/2 ball mouse, though.
I've connected my MS Optical to the USB port, and I've never looked
back. Just make sue you are well versed in keyboard navigation when in Safe
Mode, because a USB mouse will not work in this mode.

Thanks for your reply!

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. I have been using the Intellimouse Optical USB
for months now. Only after I started seeing problems did I attempt to attach an
older PS/2 mouse to the PS/2 port. I have not tried attaching an adapter to
convert my USB mouse to PS/2 and plug it into the PS/2 port. Is that what you
are suggesting? If I am understanding you right, you are saying that I should
NOT do this, you were thinking that I was using my mouse as a PS/2 mouse.

I'm not - I've been using it as USB, but I tested an older, PS/2 mouse when I
noticed the jumping problems. Mind you, this was an old ball-mouse, not an
optical mouse, and it STILL jumped around when I moved it too quickly.

Thanks again!

Please ignore my last post to you in this thread, I got my threads confused. Is
there any way to delete it?

(Sorry)

Depends on the server and your posting software. Better newsreaders have
"Cancel" somewhere on one of the menus. You can only cancel your own
messages. This sends a special "control" message to the server which then
propogates over the Internet, requesting that servers cancel your message.
Because cancel messages can be forged and there have been cancel storms in
some groups, many servers are configured to ignore them.

I prefer PS2, because you ARE able to set the report rate to 200, and
there is a noticable difference to me.

All the mice I have tried that have the USB->PS2 doohickey work fine
with PS2Rate.

Actually, if you want my suggestion for a good gaming mouse, in the
past several weeks I have tried a variety of mice brands, connection
types (serial, USB, and PS/2), and drivers from Microsoft, Logitech,
and for the Razor Boomslang in all sorts of combinations. This was
done to try and fix the Intellipoint acceleration bug (which I believe
I found the solution to, but that's in another thread).

When the dust settled, the smoothest mouse combo I found is a Logitech
MouseMan + (a ball-mouse that has the strange shape angled to the
right, NOT the blue optical one they have out now), on a PS/2 port and
using Logitech's latest drivers set to a report rate of 200. (Sorry, I
know this is a Microsoft group). Smooth as freaking silk. They're
also only $29 now.

This was a big surprise to me, as my previous favorite was the
Intellimouse with Intellieye (the one shaped like a classic
Intellimouse....they don't make them any more because of cables
breaking, and I don't like the new Opticals or the Explorer because
they put these horrible pads on the bottom of the mouse that don't
slide well...this seems to be an unfortunate trend since Logitech is
doing it too.) But after using this combo, it is clear to me that
optical mice do not track *quite* as smoothly as I thought. Yeah, I
know it is heavily dependent on the surface, but I shouldn't have to
go spend $20 on an Everglide just to get a mouse to move smoothly.

Anyway, that's just my 2 cents. :)

Take the Explorer feet off, once the hard wears a bit in use it works really
well - dead smooth.

Hi,
So you are suggesting to physically remove the stick on feet of the
optical mouse and just use the exposed plastic as the feet? Are better mouse
feet available somewhere for purchase???

Thanks.....
