Help......I need the installation disc that came with the 3D Pro, I lost
mine! I've tried using the "Sidewinder Controller Software" but it does
not seem to work. Keep
getting "Not Connected" status. Went through the microsoft
troubleshooting without
solving the problem. I have updated the drivers for my sound card, the
patch for the
Sidewinder Software, looked for conflicts, wrong IRQ's, etc.....nothing
helped.....
I would like to try using the original software before I throw out the
stick and buy a new one........If anyone has it, could you please e-mail
it to me? or better yet post it for others...(If you can post it in
this news group, that is.)

Thanks
Alan

I have the same problem and went thru all the steps you mentioned as well
as a few others. The CD that came with my Sidewinder Game Pad
drivers are no better. Still getting NOT connected. Tried an OLD Gravis game

pad and it comes up NOT connected.

Have the SB Live Value card installed with latest drivers.

Also upgraded my Motherboard to a Supermicro PIII SCD and the front side
bus of 100mhz might be the problem I had been advised.

Seems the MS sidewinder drivers do NOT like fast bus speeds????

The old software is not the answer. The problem is the 3Dpro was designed
for 33MHz bus machines and have lots of troubles on 100 and 133 MHz
machines, especially with SB Live cards. Anyway, if the stick is going to
work, you need:

Sidewinder Drivers 3.02
The SW3DPRO.vxd patch
DirectX 7.0a

All available from M$.

Remove the current SW drivers
Go into safe mode.
Install the 3.02 drivers.
Install DirectX (or reinstall it).
Reboot.
Place the vxd file in Windows/System.
Open the game controllers panel, add the 3Dpro then pray.

I've tried the above (instruction straight from M$ technical support) and
every other weird patch and fix and still can't get the stick to work with
my Dell PIII 700 and SB Live. I can, and you can, configure the sidewinder
as a CH Flightstick Pro with rudder control (be sure switch is in position
I) and get the use of everything except the four base buttons.

I had DX7 on my Dell P3-500, I installed the Sidewinder 3.02 stuff off the
website and it worked like a charm, I didn't even need the patch. (I
presume the patch is already in the software). The joystick just worked
after that.

No the vxd patch IS not part of 3.02. It is a specific patch for the
3Dpro--go to www.microsoft.com search on sidewinder and then find the 3Dpro
area--there's a link there somewhere for the download. These sticks work or
don't work without any real rhyme or reason. Many like me, can't get
anything to work. Others can get it to work once they update to 3.02, or
DX7.0a, or adding the patch. As far as I can tell, it's a crap-shoot.

What kind of soundcard/gameport are you using. Yoyu are more than likely
dealing with a digital mode compatibility issue. Perhaps a dedicated game
card.

I think you miss the point. The SW3Dpro doesn't work well (if at all) on
many new systems. The ubiquitous SoundBlaster Live is a prime example of a
sound card with which the 3Dpro has trouble. The M$ 'excuse' is that the
stick was designed for 33MHz bus machines and now we're running 100 MHz and
above and so YES, there is a digital mode compatibility problem. That still
means the sticks NO LONGER work. The M$ 'advice' is the get a new USB,
digital stick. I guess one CAN argue that if we are willing to pay
$1000-3000 for new computer technology, we shouldn't complain if some of the
peripherals also need to be updated, but if, as in my case, the peripheral
is used very occasionally (so as to be almost new) that does seem a waste.
Pouring more money in to buy a dedicated game card also seems a waste. The
most frustrating thing is that the damn things work on some machines and not
others, and it doesn't even seem to be related to the exact machines. On
other newsgroups I've seen people get the 3D to work with almost the same
machine and sound card.

Anyway, the stick can be configured in analog mode (a CH Flightstick Pro
seems the best choice) which loses the base buttons, but at least it is not
a complete loss.

Not sure I missed a point at all....I answered a question and made a
suggestion for a guy asking a question....nowhere did he mention the speed
of his machine or how old or new it may be in his post. I saw your post and
there wasn't exactly alot to add to what you knew.

You obviously know enough knowing the clock speed does make a difference.
Is it safe to assume you know the difference between a gameport and a MIDI
port, which may be what is actually on these SB cards you mention (not
personally familiar enough to say positiviely it's a MIDI port, but that is
usually the case). Beyond this........alot of times it's as simple as can
you get the right I/O range on the gameport.....can you grab
0201-0201.....or are you stuck with 0200-0207 (many PNP cards grab this
range)?

And finally which driver versions have you tried?

Steve,
in answer to your question here are the specs for my new system:
PIII 733mhz
128 mg RDram at 400mhz
SB LIVE Value sound card

I have installed the new drivers for my sound card.
I went to find the installation drivers for the SW3DPro only to find the
Sidewinder Control program. I installed that.
I installed the patch for the SW3DPro.
I went through the Microsoft "if then" survey from beginning to end ( 2 hours
and 6 or 7 re-boots' by the way)
All to no avail. Still " Not Connected"
It worked on my old system last week just fine. I have since reformatted and
the "Sidewinder Control" program does' nt work on that system either. It's a
Win 95
P166 (no Roman Numerals) 80 mg ram.

I also have a question. Why can't I download the original instal disc? I
have no need for a whole program and interface for my joystick. It s a
joystick for
crying out loud. What ever happened to the KISS principle? Rock and Roll All
Nite? No, Keep It Simple Stupid.
It's overkill in my humble and frustrated opinion. :)

Later,

Try to dowload the latest software for the 3D Pro from microsoft
homepage.
That helped to get my 3DPro working with Win98SE

Was just trying to say that any 'solution' that has one pouring more money
into a system to try and keep the _old_ SW3Dpro running is probably not
wise. If you are going to spend money, get a new USB stick.

rwt (New USB SW Racing Wheel works fine!)

The newsgroups here, at the SB Live site, and at sites like Dell are
littered with people who CANNOT get the SW3DPRO to connect. M$ tech admits
(I have had direct contact) that new drivers and the patch work only on SOME
systems. Happy that it works for you, but there IS NO magic bullet that
fixes all systems. The 3Dpro is a lost cause on _some_!

I'm going to be honest here.....it's a little bothersome to see you saying
SB "value" card......to a point I want to make sure that's really what it's
sold as. My understanding is there was once a "Vibra" card which were sold
cheaply and only available through OEM's.........so I'm wondering if the
fact that it's a "value" card should really say something. Knowing it
worked on the old system tells us it is a hardware compatibility...

The old driver is long gone from the internet.....I know what you mean by
KISS.......but try telling that to the hard core gamers! And on a more
serious note....remember you have a digital joystick, it's more advanced
than the simple analog sticks.....that's all in combination why it's not so
simple.

Steve,

The reason I call it a "VALUE" card is because that is part of the name!
Check out the web site: http://www.americas.creative.com/sound/live-value/.
Heck, it says it's "geared for gaming" And was an 1998 Best Sound Card award
winner at C/NET. And it sounds a hell of a lot better than my.............
(I can't believe I'm going to admit to this)
MWave sound card. (You can stop laughing now.)

Now, if the joystick worked on the old system with the "old drivers" and now
doesn't work on the old system with the new "Sidewinder Control" program what
does that tell you? If I had the "old drivers" I guarantee it would work on the
old system.

Would you believe me if I told you the it MIGHT work with the old drivers?
Reason I say that is sometimes you can "trick it" into working if you
calibrate it as a CH Flightstick then as a 3dPro.

I have the very same problem. There is nothing wrong with the joystick
I think it has something to do with the soundblaster live gameport.
I'm still looking for a solution. I'm trying directx 7.0a still have
to reboot though. If anyone finds the solution could you please let me
know.

I got a prehistoric Socket 5 P120 with a Ensoniq VIVO and SideWinder 3D Pro.
The joystick comes from late '95, part 63545.

If I use the V2 or V3 digital drivers, the joystick quits working after
about a minute or so. Kinda like unplugging the joystick. I think I've
tried those drivers with DX5 and DX7.

I use the digital V1 driver for FS98. I haven't found any driver that
lets the twist axis control the rudder.

I use an analog driver with newer games, for the V1 digital driver is flaky.

I could prolaby scare up the V1 and V2 digital drivers if anybody needs 'em.
Just bark.

I'm having the same problem as those mentioned in this thread. I
installed the updated 3D Pro software and now I cannot get the joystick
to be recognized in Quake (it worked before the install). I haven't
figured out if its the update of joystick software, directx7oa update,
soundblaster 128D software or the 3Dfx software. I have deleted and
reinstalled all of them. If anyone comes up with an answer please help.
I have tried everything that's indicated in this thread. By the way I
have a Gateway PIII 450. HELP!!!!
