I can start up in Safe Mode, and when I check System
Properties, under the Performance tab, it shows the
additional RAM, but it also indicates that drives A, C and
D are using MS-DOS compatibility mode. Apparently Windows
is unable to identify a real-mode driver or memory-
resident program.
When I run msconfig, I see "REM to make a DOS boot
diskette see C:\DOSBOOT\DOSBOOT.txt" and below I see "rem
The below DOS CDROM driver is not required to run
windows98 Device=c:\cdrom\oakCDROM.SYS/D:IDECD000
When I take out the block of RAM and restart my computer,
everything is working properly. Is this a Windows 98SE
problem or a mainboard problem? I have the correct RAM,
but can't figure out what the problem is! Thank you for
your help!

Windows 98 can get confused with more than 512MB of memory. You have to
limit your RAM to this. From run command, type 'msconfig'. Click the
advanced button and check 'Limit memory to' and type in 512MB.
You may also need to set MaxFileCache setting. Click on System.ini tab.
Under theVcache setting, add a new string. Type' MaxFileCache=524288'. This
is 512MB in bytes. This limits the amount of virtual Ram Windows can use for
storing dll's and such.
Hope this helps.
