I've been looking all over the place for the Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000
software to download from the Microsoft website. I always get to a drop down
menu that asks what type of house I have and the Bluetooth Notebook Mouse
5000 is never an option.

Does anyone know where I can download the software?

Hi, Nathan,
Go here
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/downloads/default.mspx

Everything in our HW world is based off of www.microsoft.com/hardware. From
there, there shoudl always be a link in the left navigation pane for
"Dowloads". Currently it's under Resources, but that's always subject to
change. ;-)

Hope that helps!

Cathy,

Thanks for responding. I have done this quite a few times but the problem is
that I'm not sure what to pick from the drop down menu. I pick mouse, and
then the next drop down menu does not list the Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000.

Which software should I pick since the Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 isn't
on the list?

Thanks,
Nathan

D'oh. Sorry, I didn't read your post carefully enough.
As far as I know, the bluetooth mouse should be in the 6.2 driver version
that is posted. Trying choosing SideWinder as your mouse type, and then pick
the lanauge and OS as appropriate, and it should get you the most recent
driver. When you go to install it, it should list all the mouse types - see
if Bluetooth is listed there. I don't have a box with 6.2 on it where I can
check, but if it isn't there, write back.

Cathy and Nathan,
I have the same problem and keep checking to see if MS will add the
bluetooth notebook mouse to the download file, they have not as of today. I
have a workaround for you that I have used since Jan08 on my vista notebook.
In control panel-mouse under connected device, select, "wireless intelimouse
for blutooth". You will find that it is a good match for the 5000. I have
tryed most of the others listed and this works the best. Good luck, Jack

hi cathy

I have just bought the Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 for use with my macbook
pro and have the same issues with the software or lack of it

I used the wireless mouse 5000 and ended up at the intellimouse 6.2 sw - but
how do I assign the 4th button - there is no provision for this it seems - or
am I missing something?

the 4th button is why I chose this mouse and it is disappointing to not be
able to use it

any ideas?

Hello Cathy,
I concur with mark ow. I bought this mouse because of the fourth button for
use with a Dell laptop running Windows XP 32 bit. I have tried most of the
mouse options in the driver list and customized the fourth button to 'Ctrl'
as I have a CAD program that becomes much more productive with that change on
the mouse. However, it does not seem to work with any of the stock drivers.
I can understand that this is a 'basic' mouse, but how hard is it to add it
to the list of mice in the download list/installer program and come up with
the right settings? I purchased this mouse fully expecting the fourth
button to work properly. Please tell me which particular other mouse I would
need to select to be able to customize the function of the fourth mouse
button!!

Thanks,

I can't get my mouse to connect either.

I ran through the wizard and it wants to install 'btwhid.sys' on WIDCOMM
Installation Media, which I have no idea where to find this file. It's not
in my Win32 drivers folder or easily downloadable from any website that I've
searched.

I also tried & downloaded the IP32Eng6.20.182.0.exe from Microsoft and get
this error:

"C:\...IP32Eng6.20.182.0.exe is not a valid Win32 application." but my
laptop is XP SP2 32bit, not 64. I even tried the "workaround" in the Mouse
Propertied and changed the "Connected device" to "Wireless IntelliMouse
Explorer for Bluetooth" and still can't connect.

Yes, my Bluetooth is enabled and my laptop can see the mouse and says its
connected, but it moving the mouse doesn't move the cursor. HELP!!!

Thanks,
Trissa

I don't know if it would help or not. (Disclaimer, I"m not a support
technician, I've finally hit the 3 month mark on this team but still have a
lot to learn.)

I know that in the help we say that we only officially support the Microsoft
bluetooth stack. We simply can't test all of the other stacks. Doesn't mean
that they won't work, just that we can't promise you that they will.

You could try installing the 6.2 driver and choosing the wireless
InteliMouse Explorer for bluetooth, and then see if you can set the Advanced
Bluetooth Settings. Here's what the help says about them:

Software-managed Bluetooth mode Use this mode when you share a mouse between
multiple computers.
The software is configured automatically each time you start the computer.
You can move your mouse and the Microsoft transceiver to another computer
without installing the software or reconfiguring the device

Hardware-managed Bluetooth mode Use this mode when you use your mouse with
one computer.
Your transceiver behaves like a standard Bluetooth radio when you start your
computer and results in no delay.

Wish I could be more help.

The only idea I have would be to try settting the mouse to the wireless
InteliMouse Explorer for bluetooth and seeing if that will let you set your
4th button. I have no idea if that would work (and I don't think it would
hurt anything, but I can't even promise that much.) I'm finally starting to
learn a few things about PC, but I know even less about Mac hardware.

You also might start a different thread with Mac in the subject and see if
anyone chimes in.

Sometimes there are buttons that are not configurable, sometimes they are
configurable if you download install software. I have no idea if this mouse
can be configured. I looked at the copy of the QuickStart Guide and it
doesn't say anything about configuring the 4th button. I tried to find the
PDF for the packaging but I don't see it, so I don't know if the packaging
mentions that the fourth button is configurable. The only one I've seen
mentioned by other people is wireless InteliMouse Explorer for bluetooth. If
you try that and you still can't change the 4th button, it could be a
firmware thing and you can't change it. I'll try to find out more, since
there are so many questions about this mouse, but I'm still in the process
of learning who's who around here and it may take a few weeks before I can
report back. It seems like a FAQ for this product might help. I'll see what
I can do.

I wish it, too. I have installed 6.2 version of the Wireless InteliMouse
Explorer for Bluetooth driver and I don't see any Advanced Bluetooth Setting
option in it anywhere. The driver works the same way as what I had before:
it does not pair up with the mouse automatically after I turn up the mouse
and make it discoverable. I still have to go through the manual "Add
Bluetooth Device" routine as before. Why can't your MS driver discover you
own MS mouse automatically?

Hm, it doesn't seem to be a generic bluetooth setting, just something you
get on the Wireless Laser Mouse 8000, which is bluetooth but doesn't have
bluetooth in the name. So that wont' help, because that mouse setting is
looking for a transceiver. That leaves me out of ideas.

So glad to see there are others reporting the same issues; however, I'm not
pleased that there is no solution. I have installed Intellipoint 6.2 and
selected the various mouse names that were suggested here, but all of them
expect a transceiver. When I follow MS alternate instructions for a different
mouse (Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000) and use Control Panel-Mouse, Wireless
tab, the Connect button just brings up the transceiver instructions again.

In a previous installation, the mouse automatically installed using the
Vista built-in drivers and worked flawlessly for about a month. (Mouse was
detected when notebook was awakened.) So I know it can work, but for some
reason Vista detected a problem last night and could not diagnose the
problem. I restored from the last known working system and now there's no
mouse driver for my Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 and no way to install one.

Except for the Dell laptop itself, all products (OS, mouse, drivers, IE,
etc.) are Microsoft products. Evidently MS did not test using MS products.

Hi Cathy,
the problem is that with no software there is no way to disable the thumb
button on this mouse. Is there a way to disable this button any other way?

We are also having problems with this mouse on a Dell Vostro Notebook with
Vista 32 bit.

Having previously worked, it now does not.

Using the Bluetooth wizard we can connect to the mouse but it simply does
not work, despite being recognised by the notebook and with a status in the
control panel as working properly.

During the process of connecting using the Wizard, the notebook searches for
driver software which it does not find because it does not exist.

We know that the mouse is OK as it can be used on another laptop and a PC.

This is a good, but expensive device. It would be great if you could make it
work.

I'm having the same issues as SebLuis on an HP Pavillion, Vista 32-
bit. I had no problem setting it up initially and it had been working
fine for several month, but now all of a sudden it doesn't. It's
showing in the Bluetooth Devices as connected, but it's just not
working.

I tried uninstalling and reconnecting, but in the end Windows says it
failed to install the drivers, but it's showing in the Devices as
connected again. I also tried doing a system restore, since it was
working 2 days ago, but that didn't work either.

If it says access denied, the first thing I think is, are you logged in with

You might want to spin up a different thread witha more specific subject to

Of course crazy glue or surgery would void your warranty . . . .

And no, there is no way to disable the button programmatically.

It was never designed to be supported. The main marketing point was
"Transceiver Free Convenience", just plug it in and it works with your

Hello from Belgium...
I have same issue here. Worked for a few days (although it freezes
every few minutes for 4-5 seconds - EXTREMELY ANNOYING).
Then I wanted to fix this freeze issue, uninstalled and now cannot
have it to work again.
Problem, as shared by others it seems : recognized by bluetooth etc...
and the new hardware found... unknown type... then tries to find a
driver for it... tries from the web (no choice given) and then fails
miserably.
Intellipoint 6.2 does not recognize this model but as had been said,
select another model (4000 or 6000 are comparable)
Very dissatisfied at this point.. I hesitated with a Logitech and
thought Microsoft was a safer choice :-(

Hi,

I just purchased this mouse, and I'm trying to make it work with my HP
Pavilion dv9000 and vista 32.
I still don't find this mouse on the list in Intellipoint software.
The mouse is recognized in BT peripherals section as MS bluetooth
notebook mouse 5000, but then windows tries to locate and install
driver software and in result I get a message that an "unidentified
device is installed and ready to use".
Under BT tab in mouse properties mouse is recognized properly, but the
cursor doesn't move and none of the buttons works.
Is there any way to make it work?

Hi! Likewise, I just purchased two of these for two different
laptops. Although annoying I understand that you can't reprogram the
buttons. What I'm finding though is that if for some reason the
communication between the mouse and computer is interrupted during a
given Windows session you can't easily reconnect it. The only thing
that I have found that works is to go into the Bluetooth software and
rediscover it or cold boot the machine and turn the mouse on at the
appropriate time. I have a Kensington mouse also and with it all you
need to do is press one of the buttons a couple of times and it
reconnects. Depending on your machine the power settings for the port
needs to be changed so that they aren't shut off while your machine is
trying to save on power (battery or otherwise). That will only help
to keep the mouse connected though not correct the problem of what
doesn't happen once it's been disconnected. In my mind this makes
this mouse almost unusable. I've also tried MS, Widcom and Bluesoleil
Bluetooth stacks. All of them have the same issue with the 5000 and
not the Kensington. You'd think MS would do a better job with these
or (if there is a solution) in letting people know what that solution
is. Seems more like they're just trying to ignore the problems.

Also, since I just started using these I'm not sure if the those
people looking for a link to the drivers found what they were looking
for but MS lists the mouse as Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse 5000. It's at
the bottom of the list in the drop down box.

Cathy,
I've used this mouse for about six months. It would always connect no
problem when I turned my Laptop running XP sp3. Last week when I
turned it on it would work. I cannot find any instruction manual
online for this as I have lost mine. I have changed out the batteries
for new ones.
I have been able to re-pair it with my laptop and it says "connected",
but it won't move the cursor or resond to any of the buttons.

Out of the blue this bluetooth didn't work. I have tried installing
intellipoint software 6.2, but nothing has worked? What's going on?
Can you point me in the right direction?

Have a very similar problem, and same computer, same mouse.

Did you ever get it figured out? It's driving me mad - mouse worked, now
doesn't - won't connect even when you go through all the steps - mouse works
on other computers (even another Sony) and my Vaio will recognise and connect
with a Blackberry (Blackberry evn picks up the mouse) Go figure.

Was wondering if anyone had figured it out.

Same issue here. Mouse has worked for over a year now suddenly nothing. I'm
also getting the access denied errors. I would love to find a fix for this.

Hi Art
I bought the same mouse today (microsoft notebook bluetoth 5000). Its label
says it was manufactured in July 2008. I've spent the afternoon trying to
find a solution. I've now read the 44 posts relevant to this search, and one
ting is ABSOLUTELY clear - MS is giving us the run around, or we need someone
other than the illusstrious Cathy Moya to seriously respond and not simply
repackage the same old tired run-around formulae. As you can see, I am
pretty pissed off that MS sets us a BS site to purport to try and solve our
problems (as if our individual and collective time wasted is meaningless).

If you have XP SP3, sounds like there's a Windows issue with the Bluetooth
service. Could that be the reason?

I am pleased to find so many trouble issues with the MS 500 Bluetooth Mouse
posted here. Recently, within the space of a week
1) a friend who purchased a Vista bluetooth laptop from Dell, and a MS5000
mouse was able to get the mouse to work, but turning off the computer would
destroy recognition, and discovery had to be re-established every time.
After much time with the Dell help system, the MS5000 was returned for refund

2) I now purchased a MS5000 mouse for my Win XP SP3 laptop, and was unable
to make discovery work at all. Much time was spent with MS help, with the
tech sharing my computer, but after asking that I "turn on bluetooth on my
keyboard" I concluded there was no such key, that MS could not solve the
problem, and returned the mouse. I woiuld still like to have and am ready to
repurchase, but there is evidently a slew of unsolvable problems.

I too have regretfully purchased a Microsoft bluetooth notebook mouse 5000
which MS cant seem to figure out how to support. I have a dell D630 running
win XP SP2 with bluetooh hardware enabled and the indicator is lit. MS seems
to assume I will plug in a usb adapter even though they dont require or
include one with the mouse i have purchased. I have been told that once I
install the drivers for the mouse the bluetooth will be enabled and appear in
the control panel. Currently there are not blue tooth icons in control panel
and no blue tooth services in the services msc view. The mouse works fine
with other pcs I have running a 3rd party Toshibe Bluetooth stack. I have
followed your instructions and downloaded the latest 6.3 MS mouse software
pack and all the mice to select come with a usb blue tooth adapter. Please
explain to me how to enable, turn on the MS bluetooth provided with the OS. I
have wasted countless hours on troubleshooting this.

Tell it not to use any passkey when connecting the mouse. I'm not sure where
you got instructions to use 0000 and 0001.

This is a very old thread on the mouse and there are some more recent
postings, including one where I offer to send you a copy of the QuickStart
Guide if you need it. (The setup information isn't usually on the box, so
don't feel bad about tossing that.) Send me email directly (remove the
"online" part from my reply email address) and I'll gladly send you the PDF.

Here are some Knowledge Base articles you can try, if you'd rather:
952818 How to connect the Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 to a notebook or to
a portable computer http://support.microsoft.com/kb/952818
953695 The Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 does not let you reassign the
functions of its buttons http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953695

And just to repeat what I've said in other threads, I know now that the
Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000:
1) does not use any driver software - it must work with your native BT stack
on your box. (Installing the IntelliPoint driver will not change anything
about using this mouse)
2) does not have any USB receiver - you must have an onboard BT receiver or
a separate USB dongle
3) does not let you reconfigure your button assignments
4) the packaging does not say one way or the other whether you can re-assign
the buttons. I have suggested that in the future we should be more clear
about that.

Hope that helps,

Hi Jack,

I have tried this many times and it does not work. Under control panel/mouse
I do not have an option for 'connected device', nor do I have the option to
select wireless intellimouse' anywehre in mouse settings. I am using Vista 64
bit. I tested the mouse on another laptop on XP and it works fine, but I am
still unable to use the back button on Vista. I even changed the button
settings and they do not work.

Any ideas?

I have recently bought this mouse and haven't experienced a problem
installing it. However, I am experiencing problems with the fourth button.
Evertime I surf the net or use Outlook it seems to operate the "back" button
facility. This is very annoying and would love to know how to deactivate
this button.

You are correct, there is no software for the Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook
Mouse 5000.It has to work with your exisiting Bluetooth stack and connects
using the UI provided with that stack. You can't reassign any buttons on
that mouse.

To Alisair: Using Intellipoint 6.3, I set my connected mouse to
"Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer for Bluetooth" thinking that I could
reassign the 4th button. I was unable to change its function, but one
nice side effect is that now that button doesn't seem to do anything
no matter which function I choose.
So, to summarize, if you set it to the above mentioned mouse, it seems
to disable the 4th button (which is a good alternative given you can't
change it.)
Hope this helped!
I'm in the process of installing that XMouse program linked on the
previous page. I hope that will work.

Pair your mouse until B/Tooth finds it Cathy, then go to Device Manager, look
for Item with the yellow exclamation mark! click to update driver but click
seach computer then click choose yourself, look through the list then click
HID Compliant mouse click that then ok Windows will now load the driver and
away you go. Hope this helps you and the rest of people with the same
problem. Kind regards Terry.

Hi there Steve,

I know what your problem is and it is rather simple, however, regretfully
purchacing the mouse is a sad notion. My opinion is that I will never buy an
input device from another manufacturer (I am a hardware vendor and an
enthusiast and hundreds of different brands pass through my fingers every
week), There simply is nothing better.

Now, Dell install a hardware bluetooth device with a PID that has been
modified to so that Windows does not recognise it as a usable bluetooth
device and in doing so, force you to install the bluetooth software they
supply. This is a pain, I know. I was able to in the past modify the bth.ini
file to recognise the modified PID that HP uses so that Windows saw it and
used it, but this has not worked as well with the Dell E6500. not sure about
the D630 though...

Just install the bluetooth drivers and ensure that they work, then connect
the mouse.

Cathy,

Thank you for your time. The sad thing is that there is no available option
when installing the software for the mouse to select the correct mouse
option. This is sad as it is not easy to enable the 4th button (on the side).
causing a loss of functionality of the mouse.

Are you able to get this sorted out with the driver development team?

Hi, Christopher,
Later in the thread I corrected myself to say there is no driver for this
mouse. It has to work with your Bluetooth transceiver and your Bluetooth
software, or it won't work at all. And Microsoft does not provide a way to
change the button assignment. I've heard some people having success using a
3rd party driver. That's also somewhere in the threads on this mouse. If you
think it would help, I can go back and cancel my post that I made when I
first joined this team and didn't know about this mouse. I am now quite
keenly aware of the issue and have been working to help reduce the confusion
going forward. For example, I'm putting together a troubleshooting FAQ. If
you have any suggestions for FAQs to include, I'd be interested to hear
them.

I purchased the same mouse 3 weeks ago. It tends to need to be reinstalled
when turned off for a period of time. When it gets really stubborn you have
to delete the hardware from your list of bluetooth devices, turn your
Bluetooth discovery "on" for your laptop BT device, click the find devices
button while holding down the mouse discovery button. You may find more
bluetooth devices than just your mouse (especially in the office or airport)
but just reinstall the mouse with the default code 0000.

So I would really appreciate some help. I have bought this mouse and gone
through all the steps you talk through on this thread. I cannot get my mouse
to work no matter what I do. I have downloaded the driver set you specify.
I am able to pare the mouse with my laptop via the bluetooth seeting but I
get nothing.
Please help as it is very frustrating to have a MS mouse on an MS OS that I
cannot find driver support for.

Hi, Ryan,
The driver won't help, so don't worry about a driver. As I said below,

>> there is no driver for this
>> mouse. It has to work with your Bluetooth transceiver and your Bluetooth
>> software, or it won't work at all.
You say you can pair the mouse with the computer - so you get the green/red
flash and go through the Bluetooth wizard. So then the mouse pointer simply
doesn't move? Do you have another computer you can try to pair it with that
has Bluetooth? If it doesn't work on two different computers, I'd say it's
the mouse that has a problem. In that case, I can try to help you contact
tech support about getting the mouse fixed.

Folks:

MS is saying saying that they can't provide support to assign key functions
to THEIR 4 button mouse running on THEIR OS. As a 20+ year CAD tech, this
mouse is simply worthless to me as the scroll wheel MUST act as a middle
click! I threw this mouse in the garbage and purchased a Logitech BT mouse
(M555b) that works beautifully on my Dell Precision M6400 Workstation laptop
. Fully PROGRAMMABLE buttons, laser, auto shut-off, better ergonomics, etc.
Can't go wrong with this AWESOME mouse.

The Vista error codes and recommendations point the user to the HP site to
fix the HP software, when the actual problem was the Microsoft Bluetooth
Notebook Mouse 5000 driver - install the IPx64_1033_7.00.260.0 software and
the problem is resolved.
Thanks Cathy for pointing us in the right direction

Cathy:

See the response I posted to a very similar problem with the Bluetooth
Notebook Mouse 5000 at this link:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprohardware/thread/9b59054e-5f16-41b4-9d51-db4da140972c?prof=required

I think I may have figured out how to solve the problem.

In case that link does not work (it looks kind of complicated), here is the
text of my reply in that other discussion:

I had the same problem for quite a while (Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse
5000 would not pair with a Lenovo W500 laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate 32
bit), and I finally solved it by doing the following:

1) Left-clicked on the Bluetooth symbol in the notification tray, selected
"Open Settings".
2) Adjusted the check-marks in the Options tab (tab that appears first, by
default) as follows -
2a) 'Allow Bluetooth Devices to find this computer' - yes, put a check mark
in that.
2b) 'Allow Bluetooth Devices to connect to this computer' - yes, put a
check mark in that also.
2c) 'Alert me when a Bluetooth Device want to connect' NO, remove the check
mark from that box.

By putting a NO (no check mark) in the third check box down the list, I was
able to stop bubbles from popping up from the Bluetooth symbol in the tray.
Instead, all I would get was a rather large window in the middle of the
screen. I confirmed that the mouse was the item I wanted to add (it
identified itself clearly as soon as I pushed the pairing button on the
bottom of the mouse), and I was then presented with a window where I could
choose "This device does not have - or does not need - a pairing code".
Finally, it worked.

My hypothesis is that if you leave the 'Alert me when a Bluetooth Device
want to connect' box checked, the pop-up balloon from the notification tray
somehow supercedes the input you provide in the large window in the middle of
the screen - and this prevents the large window in the middle of the screen
from presenting you with a second page (second window) where you can declare
that the friggin' mouse has no pairing code, just connect it.

The only way I discovered this was through repeated trial and error, using
various combinations of the check boxes.

Hope this helps the rest of you.

I havle Windows 7 and the Bluetooth Mouse 5000. I cannot even get my laptop
to discover the mouse now. I had it working for a day or two after the
upgrade and now I can no longer get it to work. I have looked all around and
can't really find any answer to the problem that everyone seems to be having
in varying forms. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a similar issue with this mouse. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit on a
Dell D630 laptop, using the standard bluetooth that came with Windows 7 (not
Dells).

The issue is very simple: There is no option for NOT using a passkey. Unless
I put in a passkey I can't press the "next" button. So I'm stuck in this
endless loop since using say 0000 or 1111 does not work as passkeys with his
mouse.

This is a clear Bug, could you ask for a fix please.

Add me to the list. The mouse works great with my MacBook Pro on the OSX
side, but my fresh XP SP3 install on the Bootcamp (Windows) side is a no-go.
It worked with Windows 7, so why is there no support for XP? I shouldn't
need one mouse for Windows and one for Mac -- especially since it's a
Microsoft mouse!

I installed this driver IntelliPoint 7.0 64-bit for Windows 7 but the mouse
didn't seem to work. Then as I was going through the mouse settings and I
selected connect on the wireless tab, it recommended pressing the reset
button on the bottom of the mouse and holding for 5 secs. The mouse appeared
in the add device window in 4 secs and the software istalled and the mouse
works great.

I also have a problem with this mouse.

I have had this mouse for a while (worked great under linux, not surprisingly)

Now I am attempting to use it under Windows 7, and the mouse will randomly
stop working. It works for a time, and then will just quit. I have to
restart the mouse in order to get it working again.

I've been using the mouse for about a year now and it was working fine.
However my computer wasn't so I reinstalled win7. So now my mouse works but
now the scroll wheel doesn't work. I can press down and hold to scroll but
that is getting really annoying.

Any idea?

Actually I am having the same issue, although I am using Windows XP sp3.
For quite a while I had no issues with the mouse and I was pretty happy.
Until recently that is. In the beginning I though that it had to do with the
Screen Saver, since this started happening when I left my computer for a few
minutes. I turned the screen saver off, but this did not fix the problem
either. I suspected my newly installed NIS 2010, deinstalled it, but still
no improvement. Now I am going through five or more manual removals and
reconnections of the mouse per day (yep I have to leave my desk).

It never has an option for this mouse. It's a microsoft bluetooth notebook
mouse 5000 version 1.0. That is not an option when you download the
drivers. The mouse on there in the picture on the software never looks
anywhere close to this one.

Hello there,

I bought this same wireless mouse and was working fine at first with Windows
7 on my Sony VAIO Laptop VPCCW13FD which has a Broadcom Bluetooth transceiver
integrated. For some reason it stopped to work and the mouse is nor
discoverable anymore. I tried installing many different drivers, from
Broadcom or from Sony VAIO support website but still the wizard doesn't see
the mouse (it is in discoverable mode).

The problem doesn't seem to come from the mouse because I have Ubuntu 9.10
installed and their bluetooth driver does find my mouse every time I boot and
works pretty easily.

It looks to me like another driver problem in Windows 7...
Any hint?

Judging from other posts here, this may be a win7 problem rather than
specific to the 5000 mouse.

From my experience, the "drivers" are generic and the BT connectivity
is a "standard" BT connection/pairing process that should not be
specific to any BT mouse.

I have a 5000 as well as two other MS bluetooth models plus a non MS BT
mouse and they all work without problems on a number of different XP and
XPPro machines and have worked on multiple versions of intellipoint from
5.x to 6.1

To break things down;

is it a "connectivity" (pairing) problem?

if so, what BT stack is running? (ms dongle, built in bluetooth, non ms
dongle)

do other BT devices pair and work? if so, what are they?

if paired, does it work as a generic mouse? (intellipoint not running)

running intellipoint, has the 5000 been specified as the mouse type in
the intellipoint setup?

>> not discoverable anymore <<

Are you certain that the mouse was in discovery mode? (on the 5000,
button bottom press 5 seconds until red/green indicator) No Passcode or
"none"

Also, are you sure that the PC's BT was active as there are sometimes
multiple ways for it to be disabled such as a hardware switch and in a
"radio control" control panel applet plus within the BT software interface.

It seems that several undetermined reasons cause a paring break such as
pairing it with a different computer then returning to the original or
perhaps extended battery removal.

fwiw, I now maintain a "pairing" text reference file containing the
pairing steps for multiple BT devices as there are a number of different
methods used.

In case anyone still cares, I installed IntelliPoint 7.1 on an HP ZD8320us
(with built-in Bluetooth), and selected "Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer for
Bluetooth", invoked the bluetooth search function, found the mouse (the name
it returned matched that on the bottom of the mouse, "Bluetooth Notebook
Mouse 5000"), connected, and seem to be mousing without a problem. While the
buttons do not map perfectly (no "small thumb button" on the 5000), and the
wheel button seems to only invoke Auto_Scroll, I am mousing away. I am doing
this for a client (I don't like the 5000, too small; cramps my hand!), but
the client is content.....

...however, if you program it for a mouse with more buttons and use it
with another such as the presentation mouse, the button assignments
remain in effect if you switch back to the original mosue.

For those of you having trouble with getting your MS Bluetooth Notebook Mouse
5000 working with your computer, I might have a fix for you (DISCLAIMER: I'm
not sure if this had anything to do with fixing my problem or if it was sheer
dumb luck.)

I could pair my mouse with Vista, but it wouldn't do anything after that.
What I did that finally worked was I held the button down to make it
discoverable, took my finger off the button when the light started blinking
green/red, THEN clicked add device (wait until you make it discoverable). I
let it pair, my taskbar notified me it was installing
updates/drivers/whatever for the device. After it did that, it worked :D

All around, it's a great mouse, Microsoft just doesn't have enough
documentation for it. Once they get that fixed, it's smooth sailing :)

If you have an HP.......

For those with the following; Hardware Platforms Affected: HP Compaq nx6125
Notebook PC, HP Compaq nx6120 Notebook PC, HP Compaq nc6220 Notebook PC, HP
Compaq nc8230 Notebook PC, HP Compaq nx8220 Notebook PC, HP Compaq nc6110
Notebook PC, HP Compaq nc4200 Notebook PC, HP Compaq nc6120 Notebook PC, HP
Compaq nx6115 Notebook PC, HP Compaq tc4200 Tablet PC, HP Compaq nx6110
Notebook PC, HP Compaq nw8240 Mobile Workstation, HP Compaq nc6230 Notebook PC
Operating Systems Affected: Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Edition(Standard HP Product)

You must remove the HP Bluetooth software and install Microsoft Bluetooth
stack.

HP has a SUPPORT COMMUNICATION - CUSTOMER ADVISORY
Document ID: c00711848
HP Notebook PCs - Removing the HP Bluetooth Software and Installing the
Microsoft Bluetooth Stack

here:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c00711848&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

It's not a Microsoft issue, it's an HP issue.

Following the advisory works, and I would only add that at one point, where
it says to "Press the wireless activation button to restore power to the
module. The "Found New Hardware" wizard should display questioning if Windows
Update should find the driver. Select Yes this time only. " This did not
work, and I had to use "add new hardware" from the control panel in order to
allow Windows to install the Microsoft Bluetooth stack.

It works.

Has anybody worked out the best substitute mouse to configure it as? How on
earth could MS market this mouse with no software? I'm just totally
frustrated. It got recognised OK and the driver seems to be in W7, I
configured it as a Wireless 5000. I don't think this uses all its features
properly though. And why isn't it in the Intellipoint list after all this
time? If it configures identically to another moiuse why not just duplicate
that under another name? How can an organisation like MS be so inept?
