Greetings,

Due to customer feedback, Microsoft has decided to provide an installation
package of the Microsoft Agent core components for use on Windows 7
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969168.
). This package includes the required components to enable applications to
work with MS Agent. In addition it contains the character "Merlin" which
was also shipped in Windows Vista. Please read the EULA with the package
for more details for downloading, installing, and servicing for end users.
Microsoft Agent is still being deprecated and will not be included in future
versions of the operating system. This package is intended for use only on
Windows 7 and is not supported on any previous or future operating systems.
No new features have been added to this release, but the product has been
localized for languages supported on the Windows Vista operating system.

This package may not be redistributed. In addition, development of new
Microsoft Agent applications is not supported on the Windows 7 platform.

Thanks to the many folks who provided feedback to assist us in our decision.
If you have any concerns please let us know.

For more information, please see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969168.

Sincerely,

Jason Grieves

Dear Mr. Grieves

It is a very sad situation; the future without Peddy & Co...
To my opinion, the agents were very nice and attractive companions; our
applications rely on them (for interactive help).
Therefore, is it possible to get the source code for the core-software (DLLs
and Active-X etc.) including all animation frames for the 4 standard
characters (Merlin, Peedy, Robo & Ghost)? It would be a great gesture of
Microsoft when this kind of data would be made public; why not?

Please let me know in either case.

Just to say it does not always work - Microsoft may decide to fix this - but
for me with Office 2003 and Windows 7 x64 Professional it states that the
patch is not valid for my PC

Issue is with the site for the patch - it defaults to only showing the
patches available for your system - but if you are using a 64 bit version -
it gives you the wrong patch!

Make sure you get the correct version.

The other "good" news is that with this patch Microsoft have removed the bug
with the background for the office assistant.

Hi,

I didn't exactly understand the question, but:

When I installed the hotfix on Windows 7, and ran client-base software
that utilizes Agent, it worked fine.

The hotfix will not (or should not) install on Vista

If you have a copy of Vista, you can do the following:
1. Install the older Agent core components on WIndows 7
2. Then drop the Vista binaries into the msagent filder on Windows 7
(or, you could probabnly just drop in the Vista binaries into Win 7,
if you know how to properly modify the registry)

The hotfix is supported by MS. May need a paid incident. If they can't
solve your problem, then no charge, I believe. So you may ant to check
that out.

Hi folks,

A few customers are reporting the hotfix system as showing you the wrong
package to download. This may be a browser problem, so you can manually
choose the correct package assuming you know the architecture of your
system. Specifically:

If you want English, navigate to:
http://support.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=969168&kbln=en-us

about half way down at step 1, click "Show hotfixes for all platforms and
languages" and check the correct architecture of Windows Continue with the
instructions.

Sorry for the inconvenience! We have let the hotfix team know about your
problems.

Sincerely,

Jason Grieves

Hi Jason,

Thank you for keeping us updated on this situtation. However, I went to the
link you provided
(http://support.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=969168&kbln=en-us)
and I still do not get the option to download the x64 version only the x86
version. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Jason

Google "windows 7 ms agent hotfix" without the quotes. Click the link,
might be the top one, that says "Microsoft Agent-enabled programs do
not work in Windows 7"

Sorry, but there are not "Show hotfixes for all platforms and
>> languages". It`s still not possible to download x64 version. System wants to download x86 version automatically, and of course it cannot install itself in x86 system, and it has only x86 version in installer (checked with winrar). Any ideas?

I found a relatively simple fix for Windows 7 x64 with Office XP if you're
interested. The problem lies entirely in the Microsoft Agent software (and
lack of support on Windows 7). However Windows 7 has extremely high
compatibility with Vista software. I found a redistributable Microsoft Agent
bundle (core components only) for Vista which seems to have fixed the problem
and has had absolutely no problems on or since installation (well over a week
ago with HEAVY testing). The installer file that fixed my issue can be found
here:

http://desktopmates.com/downloads/MSagent.exe

Since this is a rather abstract place to find such a file, I'll understand
if anyone doesn't trust the source. I'd be more than happy to host the
necessary file from my homepage on the Purdue University domain if necessary.
I believe this is actually very similar to the official hotfix that Microsoft
released, but since Agent seems to be 32-bit (generally), they limited the
fix to only 32-bit Windows 7 and prevented installation of the core
components on x64 for some odd reason.

Hope this helps! I've had no problems since!

Jason,
That is great news. I just recently found out about it after rewriting my
app for Win7 users. I haven't tested it yet as I don't want my potential
customers to think its fixed when in fact it will be a support nightmare. So
a few questions. Does it allow all the SAPI 4 voices and the use of Merlin,
Genie, Peedy, and Robby? Do I have to modify my VB6 code?
Thanks,
