Microsoft Word 2007 table caluclations

I have Word 2007 and I am trying to insert the formula for summing the above
column.

I have read the instructions and I follow them until it states insert new
formula.

I insert the formula "=sum(above)", however the formula stays in the cell
and doesn't do any calculations.

PLEASE - What am I doing wrong?
