I use Window XP. I have the same problem. I turn off antivirus before I do
these (as you
suggest to wordsman)
When I go the MNYCoreFiles folder in C:\Program files\money2005, I find that
the 2 folders are in "pale yellow color." (usually, the other folders in my
PC are in yellow color). I think, this may cause by virus. I scan my PC with
antivirus, and it says no virus detected. And, after I do all steps as the
aticle suggests, it does not solve the problem of "cannot locate x file". I
do all in several
times, and problem persists.
Is the MNYCorefiles my real problem? How can I do next?
Boo.
The pale yellow color simply means the folder is hidden. The fact
that you see it means you have turned on the option in Explorer to
show hidden folders/files.
If they are the hidden files (MNYCoreFiles, and Common), that means I do all
the steps correctly (I copy and paste to the new Money2005Update). WHy the
problem of " cannot locate money file" does not solve?
That means I do all steps correctly. But the problem is not solved yet.
WHat can I do next?

Find the sample.mny file in your install folder. That may be
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money 2005". Copy sample.mny file to
your Documents folder in Win7. Right-click the Money start icon
and select RunAsAdministrator. Click File->Open and browse to that
sample.mny file. Money 2005 will do an update. Close Money.
Reboot the computer. Then open Money and check that Help->About...
says you then have version 14.0.*.1105.
Make sure your .mny and .mbf files are in your Documents folder.
Then you should be able to File->Open or Restore your existing
files.
See http://money.mvps.org/faq/article/630.aspx for a method of
making a self-contained disk for reinstall of Money 2005 with the
updates in place. Be sure to do this before the end of 2011. Do
not lose the disk.

What is your version from Help->About?
Is your problem that you get an error message that says "cannot
locate x file". where x is the name of your *.mny file??

That indicates the real symptom of the problem. Did you open
sample.mny as an XP administrator user?

Find the Sample.mny file in your install folder with Windows
Explorer. That may be
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money 2005". Right-click the sample.mny
(it may only say Sample on your computer) file and choose Open.
That should open Money. Let any updates happen. Close Money.
Thanks.
But, what would happen, if I will install WINDOW7?
Will the problem recur?

Yes. The same solution will work until the after January 2011. To be
able to deal with reinstall thereafter, make a disk per
http://money.mvps.org/faq/article/23.aspx
And don't lose the disk.
