I already have Money 06 Dlx but I know Money 07 is out. I use Money for:
Lifetime Planner
Tax Estimator
Direct Downloading and categorizing credit cards transactions
Direct Investments downloads and Online Quotes
and Reports/Custom Reports
Current Money 2004 performance is okay
I am looking for opinions/advice from others past experience (I dread trying
all these myself): upgrade to 2007 or install the 2006 (I already have)? I
also have Quicken Dlx 2007 if that is an option?
Additionally, can anyone confirm:
the downloading of Quotes expires also?
the downloading/importing Active statements expires also?
Both of these still seem to work. Just the downloading of direct statements
for me has expired. (the 'Online Services Policy' indicates these expire
also)
TIA!!

If you already own M06, I suggest you upgrade to that and get familiar with
it. After that, download the M07 trial and install it separately. Don't let
it uninstall M06. Run them in parallel for a little while to determine if
the distinction is worthwhile to you.
M07 has some improvements in online statements and permits deleting all
scheduled bills, including those that you thought are deleted but really
are only hidden. In correspondence here, that feature was been referred to
as the "nuke the bills" option. It's a blunt weapon but is the only way to
resolve certain errors some people experience. There are other improvements
as well.

I've been using the "evaluation" version for several weeks now.
The thing that really frustrates me with M07 is that it takes a
*REALLY* long time after my transactions have been downloaded before
I can accept them. It usually says something like, "Action can't be
performed. An online transaction is taking place. Try again later."
"Later" is usually only 5 minutes or so, but it's been as long as 20!
Does this only happen in the eval version? Or is it common to all
Money 20O7?

I don't expect the trial and the non-trial versions to be different
in that area.
I suggest you make a copy of your file under another name. Open that
copy, and try
File->Repair->RemoveAllBillsData
This Remove All Bills Data [AKA nuke the bills] feature would be for
people who have experienced their Money file to run excessively
slow.
To get some information within the program,
File->Repair->RemoveAllBillsData
Read the information. Then click cancel.
Before proceeding, remember to have an extra copy or backup of your
file in case you want to undo something.
The problem will be that if you remove all bills, you will probably
want to add at least some of your bills back. This can be done
manually
with the aid of the reports that you print out before removing the
bills.
A technique that could help simplify re-entering your bills
afterward would be to go your register and selecting a
representative instance of your past bill and selecting "Make
Recurring" (Ctrl+E). This would be especially helpful if the bill is
complex, such as involving
a split.

That is the *exact* reason why I have not yet updated.
So this suggests that this problem isn't universal, but is related to
my specific installation. Am I alone in experiencing this problem?

The program doesn't run slow. It just decides (for some unknown
reason) to not allow me to accept downloaded transactions for a
long time after it's finished online. The program is otherwise
very responsive.
Ok. I misinterpreted your description. If it is just after downloads
rather than also after manually entering transactions, then it
probably would not be the bills problem. You still might want to try
a test on a copy of your file.
Money 2007 does sit there spinning [the little icon] for a while
checking against position data. Unlike earlier versions, it does not
tell you about position download if it does not mismatch with your
holdings. This matching could take a while if you have a lot of
positions. You can see that happen in the account list for accounts
with no new transactions as the PositionsToRead evaporate.
While you did not bring them up, you might also want to consider
these in Money 2007:
Clear Portfolio->UpdatePrices->UpdateAutomicallyEvery__Minutes for
better speed when entering the portfolio view.
If you download stock dividends from your broker, it is probably
best to disable the dividend forecast estimates from being inserted
into your register for you. You can disable that forecasting with
Portfolio->ChangePortfolioSettings->(General)NotifyMeOfDividendsForMyHoldings
Alternatively, de-select the various dividends from being entered
into the register when the DividendDistributionNotice appears at the
ex-dividend day.
By default, the backup of Money 2006 and later is much improved in
that it will make more than one backup. I suggest you raise from
the default of 4 to a new bigger number. Also, I suggest scheduled
backups to a USB flash drive. You will, however, have to manually
trim the older files in the USB flash drive, due to a relatively
harmless bug/quirk.
OK.

I beg your pardon, but I'm having a hard time with the double
negative. Did you mean to say, "if it does not match with your
holdings" ?
> This matching could take a while if you have a lot of

OK. So it sounds like a possible work around for this is to
isolate downloading quotes from when I'm downloading transactions.
E.g. when I do an update and I'm looking only for new transactions,
manually disable the "update stock prices" option. That's ought
to be a good experiment. I'll try it and report back.
(time passes)
Ok, I've tried it. It didn't make a difference. I'm still getting
the stupid, "You cannot perform this operation right now. There is
an online operation in progress. Try again later." Maybe I need
to try it by not downloading transactions from my brokerages.
(time passes, restored from backup)
Yep. That did it. So, it would appear that the best way
to handle this is to isolate downloading daily transactions
(e.g. checking/credit card accounts) from investment transactions
(e.g brokerage firms and quotes).

Yep. Already did that.
> You can disable that forecasting with

This sounds like it will not just forcast dividends, but also disable
any actual downloading of dividends. After reading your description,
I'm not interested in the forcasting, but I'm definately interested
in downloading actual dividends paid.

I don't understand what this means. Perhaps I haven't yet received
one of these notices?

I currently (for M04) have a manual process that copies off my latest
.mbf file to a seperate space. This is done daily. Then every week
(or so) I manually transfer these to my server on which I maintain
regular backups. M07 backup simplifies this process, in that I no
longer have to figure out what to name the files when I copy them.
Thanks for your help.

Money 2007 shows only mismatches after it has sifted thru the
download records. If there is no mismatch when it is done, it does
not display PositionsToRead.

That would do it.
On the other hand, there are things that can be done during the
spinning.

If you download from your broker you will typically download the
actual payments into your file.
When you have the forecast dividends entered by Money, they are
dated [I think] 20 days after the ex-dividend day. With actual
dividends, the pay date can vary between issues. The forecast
amounts sometimes varies from what the broker sends. The actual
amount can sometimes vary too. This can occur if there is currency
translation, tax withholding, or odd fractional amounts. If you
match what your broker sends with the then-existing forecast
transaction, you would hope the broker data would prevail. It
doesn't.
It is nice to have the notice of ex-dividend day and amount. I was
really happy to see the feature initially. If you enter the
forecasts into the register, be alert. I thought I would have the
best of both by voiding the forecast. However doing that, if I
matched the broker dividend from the download to the forecast
somehow, the matched transaction would be quietly void. If the date
and amount actually matched, Money would not ask if they were the
same transaction. The dividend would be void.

That seems possible, but I would have thought that you might have
got such a notice when you made the switch. They normally happen
when you go to the portfolio on or after the ex-dividend day. If you
accept only the forecast dividends for the stocks that only "exist"
in your watch accounts, that would be good.

Few have that kind of thing going for them, I am sure you know.
While you are reviewing your methods, you might consider having a
well encrypted copy off site.

There was an error that should be corrected now.
1. Open Money.
2. Do an Update Now.
3. Close and Reopen Money.
4. The expiration message in the Reminders section should now be
removed you should have access to online services. You should then
be good until September 1, 2007.
Sometimes these fixes take a while to propagate. So if it does not
work immediately, try again later.
