Why is my page file so large

I recently looked at my son's computer ( I know this isn't the right forum
for this, but after searching for this for a while, I have run out of
patience, please forgive me) I found task MGR reporting his page file at a
whopping 2.3 GB. he has 1 G of ram, it is an e-machine he uses for online
gaming and homework research. By comparison, I checked my desktop (4 GB ram
PF 510 MB) and wife's laptop (1 GB ram PF 685 MB) all PC's running XP. My
desktop and wife's laptop XP Pro, his is just XP. Anything you can suggest
would be helpful, machine is slower than slow. Thanks
