All,

Do applications written with MS Mobile Internet Toolkit with Visual
Studio.NET and deployed to an IIS 5 box with MMIT installed require MIS
running as a WAP gateway?

Can MMIT based applications be accessed directly on the IIS server? If so,
what are the disadvantages, if any, to doing so that using MIS may avoid?

Thanks, and I apologise if I missed any earlier threads that may have
answered these questions.

Dave

It doesn't require MMIS. You could run a simulator or through a WAP gateway
directly to the app. However, MMIS does add secure, mobile notification
capabilities to your apps as well as can act as a mobile firewall since you
may not want users trying to browse any app in your Intranet.

My 2 cents :)

Thanks for the reply Tom.

So to continue to display my ignorance... if I don't use MMIS, do I *need* a
WAP gateway, assuming I have some kind of mechanism for securing the app,
and I don't require any push functionality?

If your devices use WAP, you are going to need a WAP gateway since it talks
that protocol. MMIS iteself is not a WAP gateway. Usually, your WAP
gateway comes from your wireless provider. A number of wireless providers
run MIS Carrier Edition which makes connecting your enterprise to their WAP
gateway and vice versa much easier and secure.

Without a WAP gateway, WAP devices cannot browse your pages since there is
nothing to catch the WAP requests on the other side.

Hope this helps.
