XPO sp2 upgrade slows system

I just recently installed the XP sp2 upgrade from the MIcrosoft site. My
system is now running at about 1/3 the previous speed. I can almost complete
a crossword puzzle while it is loading.

My computer is a HP (desktop) with a pentium 4, 200gb HD, 1gb of ram (max).
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
