I'm currently running the trial version of MP Europe 2009 and so it's
obviously a little unfamiliar right now. One thing that does stand out is the
very limited choice of push pin colours. I'm finding it hard to distinguish
between them. Is there anyway around this?

I notice on the MP website that Europe 2010 is estimated for release in
January - does anyone have any idea if this will be a major upgrade and worth
waiting for? Being unfamiliar with MP it's hard to determine from the website
whether the changes will be significant or not.

Also what's the typical upgrades pricing policy?

Thanks for any input.

Yes Microsoft "messed up" when it comes to the pushpins in MapPoint
2009. The number of pushpins was cut from >300 to a mere 40. The
'regular pins' and geometric symbols originally came in 8 colors.

You will be happy to learn that these are fixed in MapPoint 2010.
Although some of the indexes are different to 2006 (this is probably
only of interest to programmers), virtually all of the pushpins have
returned. The only I've noticed has disappeared is the euro symbol.
So yes it is worth waiting for because you get your pins in 8 color
variants + lots of other symbols!

MapPoint 2010 also has things like "map features". Basically you can
control the visibility of things like rivers, cities, boundaries, etc.
For example, you can switch them off for greater clarity.

Also some relatively minor but potentially useful features like pushpin
sets can be hidden.

That sounds like just the ticket.

I'm still finding my around the software and trying to determine if
it's going to be useful for the intended function. So I imagine I'll
be back here with more questions soon enough...

Thanks for the info.

This post was pretty useful to me - I'm trialling 2009 Europe edition at the
moment & the lack of pushpins came as a bit of a shock after having worked
with other similar products in the past that had a bit more flexibility (&
principally, smaller pins!).

For my own currently limited purposes MP 09 does the trick and I got round
the lack of variety of pushpins by making some of my own little bitmaps or
icons to use as custom ppins. It works brilliantly for me, but does seem to
make mp a little slower to work with. Not the point though - most important
to me is that I get the end product right & in appropriate format.

Out of interest what other similar products have you tried? I ask as this is
my first venture into this mapping software and so I'd appreciate
understanding what else is available and how it performs.

I should mention I'm using MP to plot the locations and characteristics of
various types of customers - if that makes any difference?

btw, MapPoint Europe 2010 is now out.
As the North American edition has a free trial on the Microsoft website,
I'm assuming the European edition(s) do as well. (it has been on MSDN
for a few weeks now).
